    The insulinemic index comments in the conclusion recognise a good correlation of insulinemic index and GI (excellent in meals with protein).

    Thankyou, it is amazing what you can find in google scholar.

    If i’ve skim it correctly the correlation in the conclusion is about the six foods tested. The chart showing the correlation is quite interesting when you look were foods appear on their own vs as part of a meal. Pasta, for example, has an II of about 90 on its own, but the meals with pasta in have an II of almost 280.

    And? You need to concentrate:

    “White bread is often given a GI or II of 100 as the reference point for other foods.” =/= this is the absolutely right way to do it. It does = this is how some people do it in some papers.

    Check back, Solo, I’ve refered to “bread” and “whole wheat” bread, not white bread. Even white bread has its uses though, the ham sandwich after the pool session is white bread.

    whatever the cause this invalidates the choice of bread as an internationally accepted standard for GI calculation

    Oats is another matter. Personally if I need to snack and I’m out and about I do grab a flapjack. But then everyone thinks I’m a useless dieter so *shrug*.

    Good for you. I think i was misremembering, and i can’t find the paper in question, but i think it was actually just II which was calculated with white bread as the index point of 100. My apologies for any confusion.

    You haven’t told me about the lectins or the phytate.

    Now you’re only saying certain types of bread are fine depending on what I’ve been doing.

    You’re just out of date and seem to refuse to update your thinking.
    Fortunately, not everyone is like you.

    By your own admission you are very active, on whatever food you choose to eat.

    So what do you know about weight gain and weight loss ?.

    Its no news here, that if, like TSY, you are an exercise addict.
    You can eat what the heck you like and you won’t gain weight if you’re moving sufficiently.

    But how is that understood to be healthy

    I’ve made this point before.

    Just because your body tolerates certain foods, without you presenting any clinically detectable symptoms.
    Does automatically make that food healthy for you.

    This is taken from an article I was reading this morning about barefoot running. It’s seems to sum up this thread quite nicely…

    This is an eerily similar thing to what happens when it comes to dietary advice. Recently, I’ve been involved in debate back here in SA about paleo diets, low carb diets, high carb diets and the like. And once again, it’s a situation where people seem to become over-zealous, finding a cause for which they appoint themselves the spokesperson. Their success, which is either isolated (1 in 100) or common (1 in 2, perhaps, but never 100%) becomes their proof, and they start telling the world there is only one way to succeed. “Follow me to change your life” is the message, whether it’s barefoot running or eating like a caveman supposedly did. They thus make the mistake they accuse others of making, by lumping everyone into the same group.

    And here, those who succeed become loud, outspoken (and dare I say, obnoxious), whereas those who fail slink away into the background and remain quiet about their failure. So those who tried barefoot running and got injured disappear, those who succeeded often find a soapbox, write a book, and shout about it. Those who try low carbohydrate diets and fail revert back to routine with minimal fuss, whereas those who succeed feel the need to tell the world. They dismiss any research study finding that challenges their position as “corrupt”, “incompetent” and “garbage”, and so debate goes nowhere. Once again, this happens because of aggressive advocacy, when it should be about education.

    The golden rule in science should be that polarization should be regarded as highly suspicious. There are very few things that are known with absolute certainty, and when you’re dealing with incredibly complex human physiology, the individual differences that make us who we are, what we’re good at, how we run and what we eat, for example, are so vast and complex that nothing can be polarized without being wrong! So when someone says “It’s all about training, genes don’t matter”, they’re just as wrong as someone who says “It’s all about genes, training is irrelevant”.

    I’m learning all the time and adapting what I/we eat, iDave. I’m learning from threads like this and from persoanl experience. At the moment I’m having to relearn. I think it’s probably ageing but some things that I used to love upset my stomach now, apples for example.
    How have you changed your mind in the last week?

    I think I’ve recovered enough to do some DIY and it’s a lovely evening.

    You are wasting away TSY! Oh, you know how we trimmed my weights rountine down? And now that i’m not climbing at all (not enough time, boo), i’m so weak upper body wise. The trx press ups/mountain climbers etc are so hard work as i can hardly do them now having lost so much upper body strength. Its not even meant i’m lighter either! 😡

    I may have to consult you again to see what i could re-introduce that will help without overdoing it. I know i don’t need stronger arms for road racing, but when its now my arms that let me down for things like press ups…well its just not good. *shakes head*
