Following on from a thread I started a few days ago- bargain used xc race bikes.
I have done the inevitable and fallen back into familiar territory and blown my budget ( in my mind at the moment)
The ibis dv9, seems close to ticking my xc race/marathon box but offers a little more too.
    Anyone got one?
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

If the DV9 replaced the Tranny, does that mean the Tranny was the DV8?

No idea what your on about? I assume other ibis models? not a clue, haha. Never looked at ibis before, not normally my kind of thing.
If the tranny is similar but older/cheaper? It’s probably worth me having a look

Edit: just had a look… tranny looks/sounds good, still prefer the dv9 but any feedback on the later tranny’s would be good too

Nobody rates ibis hardtails then? Or does nobody like mountain bikes on here at all? 😂😂
Now if I’d asked for opinions on a gravel bike, it would be two pages by now!

In all seriousness, I’m still after opinions or alternatives, turns out I know very little about this kind of bike

Honestly didn’t know they even made hard tails until I saw this thread 🙂

Only experience so far with XC bikes is my Cube Reaction GTC Race (Lightweight/fast/capable). I did a 45 mile ride with lots of climbing and some rocky descents on it and it performed great!

The only reason I sold it was because it was replaced with a Scott Spark RC. I’ve done all sorts on this. Took me a while to gel with it, but once I did I started loving long epics on it!

The twinloc remote is really useful and I have it in the middle setting most of the time (lock out for road sections and fully unlock for more technical descents). The only thing I can fault it on is on quite steep climbs, the front can wander if you’re not careful (slackish seat tube on an XL).

I really think unless you’re winching up and bombing down technical/steep descents all day, a sorted 100/120mm bike would be suitable for full days out in the hills.

My missus rides a 2016/17 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 and she loves that too! A lot of people dismiss them for being too steep in the HA, but it really doesn’t hold her back on the descents. I’d like to try one in my size… then again, I’d love to try a lot of the current crop of XC bikes.

I agree with your sentiment regarding 100-120mm, Scott spark is on the list, seems to be a lot of love for them and plenty about 2nd hand

Glad I am not the only one then! This was on my short list when I thought that the jammed seat post in my current carbon HT was about to write off the frame.

1300g frame, 68 degree HA and the versatility it appears to offer made it a very interesting option. I prefer racing a light trail bike than an arse in the air, 100mm negative rise stemmed euro race whippet.

Cannot find any reviews on the DV9 but did manage to find a couple of UK stockists….report back if you buy one please as am still very interested!

I know…I really want a race whippet but the geometry of the dv9 seems to offer so much more potential, for relatively little compromise on its race worthiness!

Not sure I can justify buying new though, I know I’ll get carried away with the build and get in all kinds of trouble. Seems like nobody is interested in them this side of the Atlantic though, so 2nd hand may be hard to find

I love Ibis as a brand, I had a Mojo HD for years and ridden a lot of their bikes, including the old Tranny. Haven’t ridden the DV9 but if their other bikes are anything to go by it will be ace. Geometry is more XC/Marathon than trail orientated as I’d hoped, which is what ruled it out for me, but if I wanted a light XC HT for racing, it’d be towards the top of my list. Worth checking out the Genesis Mantle though, similar bike but the geometry is more up to date, longer reach, shorter chainstays etc. If it was pure XC and you wanted something a little more old school in it’s ride feel, Ibis would be ace. The Genesis would, on paper at least, look to be a better all rounder.

I’ll have a good look at the mantle, cheers. Had a couple of genesis bikes over the years and happy to buy another.
It’s amazing what you don’t know, when you are looking for a slightly different bike to normal! I was completely unaware of the mantle!

    DV8 – raised a smirk here.

Love my Mojo but when it came to a hard tail, I went with the Transition Vanquish. Even cheaper than ever before now. It’s a great frameset so I’ve no idea why it’s not been more popular.

Just seen the Mantle frame is CRAZY cheap at the minute… https://www.freewheel.co.uk/genesis-mantle-xc-carbon-race-2018-vargnad3

£599 for that is a bargain
