Owning a pet dog is now antisocial. We’ve reached a tipping point and whatever dog owners say about their individual pet they can’t deny that generally dogs cause huge issues with noise pollution, injury from bites and turds.

There are well behaved owners and badly behaved owners but as there are too many owners the problems remain.

Walking along Studland beach at Easter was as usual a scene of carnage as literally hundreds of dogs were merrily barking, fighting, jumping up at children and crapping away – spoiling the day for the non dog owners. Obviously when the seasonal ban comes back in May it will be a much nicer place to spend time.

Every morning my family is woken up at around 6.00 am by the neighbours dogs barking – unless of course there is a siren going off far in the distance any time in the night when they howl for 30 minutes in reply – then my kids might sleep over the dogs barking in the morning as they are so tired.

Even my friends who are perfectly intelligent in every way seem to have a blind spot when it comes to their dogs.

I can see the attraction of having a dog, I like animals but won’t own one because I am simply not that selfish.

Maybe you should get one, may make you a bit less bitter…

I am not sure I live in the same Country as a lot on here, dogs shitting in pubs, dog shit everywhere, dogs barking all night and dogs fighting on the beaches! (Winston would be proud.)

Maybe a bit of poetic licence?

No, as per most rants on here this simply boils down to “some people are dicks”.

@gobuchul LOL at the winston quip – and unfortunately no poetic licence employed, I wish there was.

@kerley – when I retire to my Welsh farmhouse, thenI’ll get one

Guessing it will be too late to save you from your ranty outlook but good luck anyway.

    Eurgh.

I’ve always been a dog owner. On a few occasions in my entire lifetime, I’ve left a bag for collection on my way back. If my memory serves me right, I’ve forgotten to collect those bags on a sum total of two occasions over the years. And I’ve headed right back to retrieve them and dispose of them correctly.

All bags should be biodegradable which – whilst not a solution to the problem – would at least mitigate the effects. Biodegradable bags should under no circumstances be a license to leave shit everywhere.

I was out in the Peaks last year when one of my dogs took a shit off to the side of the path. I went to bag it and was spotted by the Peak Parks ranger who was doing some work on the footpath.

‘Don’t worry about bagging that’ he said to me. ‘The slugs will sort it out’. It was only this weekend in the Lakes that I did for the first time see a slug feasting on a meal of shitty goodness.

There are bad eggs in every walk of life and hence there are people that object to mountain bikers as much as there are people that object to dog owners. In both instances (and many more) education, awareness and tolerance are the key. The outdoors is there for everyone and if someone is ruining it for someone else then they should quite rightly be taken to task.

Licensing, monitoring, bins etc. all cost money in both the short and long term. Someone mentioned microchipping – FYI it is indeed now mandatory. But it’s irrelevant in this case.

I’ve no doubt that this thread will run to double-page-figures because it’s an emotive subject. I thought that we as mountain bikers were rather more tolerant of other peoples pursuits or hobbies.

I don’t personally want a horse/holiday home/caravan/green-lane vehicle/cat etc. But I appreciate that others may. I can only hope that they enjoy their hobbies in the responsible manner in which I do myself.

As someone else mentioned, if that means buying a dog whilst living in an urban environment then they need to be prepared to follow it around with a pocketful of bags. Making sure to collect every shit and dispose of it responsibly on *every* occasion.

Indeed and if they didn’t have dogs and bags of poo they would find other ways to be dicks. Well, they probably do anyway.

It is silage that you see being towed behind tractors in big cyclindrical containers?

I remember hearing a news article where objectors to fracking (including some celebs), were ‘accidentally’ sprayed with muck by some farmer.

Can’t possibly condone doing that to some irresponsible dog owners…

But if the dog poo was in bio-degradable bags, surely it could be recycled?

I think most plastic bags (5p shopping, bread bags) should be bio-degradable becauase were being encouraged to compost our food waste, but the supermarkets charge a lot for such bags.

    By 2019 I predict a riot.

no you townie, 🙂 silage is cattle feed, basically fermented grass.

It pongs a bit close up but not like shit.
