I met the missus at work, and I guess some flirting in the workplace was involved. Of course now I realise that it was just an abuse of a sexist power structure. 25 years later – is it too late to apologise?

My sister is married to her boss. I assume one of them must have shown more than professional interest at some point.

Only one way to find out Tom. If a girl strokes your arm or puts her hand on your thigh ask her if you can do that too, whilst wearing your cheekiest grin. Be sure you like her though because things could move very fast.

I wouldn’t have been offended by that. It’s certainly over the top to describe IT as creepy.
Anyway, why is a 19-year-old’s mother getting involved? She’s an adult surely?

I was in a supermarket a couple of weeks ago after work. In full Patrick Bateman mode as I’d gone straight from the office so I was looking dapper.

A female employee walked around the corner in an aisle, almost bumped straight into me and she got a bit of a fright. I laughed, apologised and protested that I wasn’t that scary.

She laughed back, said “oh definitely not” and gave me a little wink. Put a nice smile on my face for the rest of the night.

Keep up the flirting I say.

I stumbled in on my boss and his secretary having enthusiastic interpersonal relations on his desk on evening (was working late) I presume there was some flirting going on beforehand…

How do people flirt these days?

    I’m not sure they do.

I believe the accepted practice is to go onto a website that caters for one’s specific needs, sign up, meet up with another user and start stuffing body parts together as soon as possible.

just a thought, this story really needs pictures, if the customer was that hot then we should be able to see that for ourselves.

Hmmmm, this does make me wonder whether innocent flirting is dying out, and all these websites where you can hook up with someone for casual sex without having got to know the other person are the norm rather than the exception?
    Or maybe I’m over-interpreting!

Theres a whole load of normal folk out there, that actually like flattery and being flirted with.

    They’re called Normal.

Its a very sad state of affairs if a wink, a comment or smile is seen as oppressive, what a waste of humanity.

I am starting to feel guilty about enjoying the flirting by the ladies in my local S’bucks – perhaps I should try to get them fired. They are outrageous after all.

On the lesser of two evils, which is worse partonising a company that doesn’t pay the correct amount of taxes or working there and being so very naughty? Hmmm….

I think the mother is really annoyed at that fact that she’s obviously past her best.

Spot on. I’ll bet she’s one of those that describes herself and her daughter as ‘best friends’.

What a load of nonsense this all is.

If the customers do not initiate the conversation you keep mute! Simple!

    Sarcasm?

I can imagine a load of LBS workers wanting to flog the latest £3k enduro bike but keeping schtum when a customer comes in as they don’t want to be seen as a pervert.
No.

I doubt the LBS will go around calling all their customers hot just because they want to sell a £3k bike …

What’s next? The car dealer hires prostitutes to sell their cars in exchange for some quick sells? … hmmm … thinking of it that might be a good idea.

There is a whole world of different trying to sell an expensive item by prostituting oneself than that of a creepy perverted action selling a cup of coffee.

IMO harassment only starts after you’ve made it clear you’re not interested

So if the recipient of the unwanted attention says nothing because you’re her boss, then it’s ok?
Unless you’re an appalling person, most rules of thumb about this stuff come with caveats, including (but not limited to):

    – if you are obviously in a position of greater power than the flirtee, err on the side of assuming they are not interested; and

    – if the flirtee does not respond reasonably enthusiastically, err on the side of reading their non-verbal cues as indicating that they are not interested.

    🙂
