I’ve bought a set of wheels with Pro4 hubs and a SRAM XD driver. I’d like to fit a Shimano freehub – I’ve read that the end caps are slightly different for the SRAM version. Will the SRAM endcaps already on the hub work ok with the Shimano freehub?

    Thanks in advance!

No – the endcaps are different lengths to support the bearings (which are in different positions on the two freehubs), but they are available separately.

If you used the XD endcap will be too long and won’t fit the Shimano freehub.

Not enough info… The end cap for XD and old/hyperglide Shimano is the same on a Hope hub, however the new Microspline freehubs use a longer cap. So you need to decide what version of Shimano you want before you know the answer.

As above Microspline uses a longer end cap to XD and Hyperglide freehubs

Also you may need the hub seal tool to seat the green freehub seal when fitting a new freehub

If you can find the right size and depth socket you can use that instead but the proper tool is only £10

I’m using a hyperglide Shimano freehub body. So does that mean the cap currently on the wheel (which has a XD freehub body) will work? If so, that will stop me sinking more of my life savings into Hope endcaps…

If you buy the free hub, does it not come with endcaps anyway? so you have to make sure you buy the right hub designation. (i.e. 142, boost, superboost etc)

Judging by all the pictures of the freehub body, no, not unless I’m buying a Microspline freehub. Although that does tell me I’ll probably be ok with what I’ve got.

If you are switching from Shimano HG to Sram XD the endcaps are the same, no problem using your current endcap as long as you aren’t also changing hub spacing. They were different drive side endcaps on the Pro 2 EVO but Pro 4 is all the same unless it is Microspline.

    @hannahjayy – many thanks.

If you happen to want to swap your XD for my HG Pro4 let me know. Or if you want to sell it cheap.

To backup what hannahjayy says, I’ve swapped Pro4 freehubs between Shimano HG and Sram XD a few times on the same wheel over different bikes.

Always used the same end cap and never had any problems.

An update, for future readers – if swapping from XD to Shimano HG, you will need the 1mm barrel spacer. If you happen to have an old Pro2 hub lying around, that won’t help, as they have a 2mm barrel spacer…

I had a similar problem last week in the end I just took the bike to the lbs as I needed spacers for both wheels.
Imo hope don’t make it easy to know what you need

@twrch Is this 1mm barrel spacer you refer to the cassette spacer that fits on the hub before the cassette?

I’m struggling to visualise what you mean as I have 2 sets of pro 4 wheels and have moved from XD to HG a few times and always used the same end caps. Never had a problem although I accept I might be missing a trick!

No – according to Hope’s hub diagrams, there’s a 1mm spacer that goes on over the axle and before you fit the freehub body. It ends up sitting between the axle bearing and the freehub bearing. I took my other Pro4 rear hub apart, and it’s definitely there.

Sounds like your both taking about the same spacer using different language to me. That spacer is needed for all freehub iirc.

The same 1mm internal spacer is used for XD and HG freehubs, it sometimes gets stuck to the grease on the freehub bearing when it’s removed so people don’t realise it’s there but it is always needed. Stops the hub and freehub bearings binding, if you didn’t have it in you’d know about it pretty quickly.

Ah yes, I was thinking along a different track with ‘barrel spacer’ instead of washer.

I did put one back on the bike without it. Luckily I saw it binding as I tightened the through axle.

At least I think that was it, must have fished it out the other freehub in auto pilot as I don’t actually remember fixing the problem.
