My 11 speed GX 10-42 cassette needs replacing, and I fancy a bit of extra range.

A Hope 10-44 seems to an option, but the feedback on the interweb is mixed with talk of poor shifting, incompatibility with Shimano mechs and SRAM chains, and high wear on the 3 large alu cogs.

Other options would be a E13 9-44 or Garbaruk 10-46, but both are not without their problems, E13 lumpy shifting and creaks, Garbaruk creaking, tolerance isssues and loosening of the lockring.

The remainder of the pack, Shimano, Sunrace and Box are giving away a lot of weight.

If Hope is not a starter, I am leaning towards an E13.

12 speed Eagle and XTR would both be better options but would require a complete drivetrain replacement, and are too spendy for the moment.

I had the option of the 10-44t (with the 30t up front as standard) when I got my HB160, but went with the 10-48t (mated with a 32t) instead.  I felt the 10-44t + 30t a little undergeared on the test ride.

    This is coming from 11-42t M7000 and M8000 cassettes with a 32t.

I’ve put a few hundred miles on it so far, and wear seems OK, with a little bit of gouging on the alloy part purely down to shifting under high load.  Shift quality seems excellent as well when using the SRAM chain, XX1 mech and shifter.  The mech copes with the range well, and I’d not be shocked if it would work just as well with a 50t sprocket.

Not tried changing the chain yet, so that’s when I’ll know for sure, but in the past I’ve manages 4 chains out of an M8000 cassette by mildly profiling the cogs with a round chainsaw file.

What chainring have you got at the front? If a 32t could you just get another gx cassette (as they are all steel and last so well) and change to a 30t chainring to effectively lower the ratios across the block?

i’ve been using on for the last year maybe longer, shifting seems less crisp than an xx1 cassette, but not a vast difference. had to replace the aluminium section but the steel section seems untouched, its moved onto my gravel bike now. i think its a good buy, don’t forget you will need the special freehub which does push the outlay up, and the selection of wheels it fits, as i’ve a few dt swiss wheels

Currently run 28T at front, with 170mm long cranks. Want to change front to 30T, to reduce the spin out when in 10T, but then lose some climbing ability. I’m a spinner not a grinder!

Already got a Oneup mini driver so no extra cost converting to Hope.

I think the OneUp driver for DT hubs is compatible with the Hope cassette

    28 seconds too slow

Standard GX cassette and a smaller chain ring would be my suggestion. I run a 28t on my 29er to give me a low enough climbing gear, but even that means I can still spin along at 25mph on tarmac quite happily if needs be. I’m not really sure why anyone on an MTB would need the ability to go much faster, which I why I find it odd that bikes are coming with 32 and 34s as standard.

28t on a 29er is roughly equivalent to 30t on 27.5 wheels from my experience.

Problem with the Hope one is the bespoke free hub pushing up the cost. I’m a bit of a Hope whore, but that’s a little rich for a consumable item.

Sorry for the Hijack but I’m selling a new Hope 10-44t with the freehub, £150 posted if anyone is interested.  Dc30online AT gmail.com

Ive been running a 44t hope cassette. It’s been brilliant. I tried changing the chain but I’d left it too long and it jumped in 3rd and 4th.

Ive put a new alliminium top half on and it’s fine with a new chain. Bottom steel half doesn’t look affected at all.

Running with xt shifter and mech.

Friend tried the bigger cassette with xtr but it wouldn’t work. When we checked it was because the xtr only went to 40t (I think) so not the hope cassette at fault.

They are worth buying if you get the wheel new and choose the hope freehub rather than pay for one.

    They are incredibly light.

I like mine. Its the 10-48. Probably been through 3 or 4 top halves but the steel section is like new.

Shifts just fine with XT mech but I do use a one up shark cage just to make sure.

500 miles in on the original chain and swapped it over for a new one (PC1130 – £15 off of Amazon). Skipping on the 28t & 33t alloy cogs. Not unexpected, but a bit of work with a fine round file and it’s good as new.

Just a shame the alloy half isn’t steel as well. It’d last forever, and I’d accept the weight penalty.

I too would be interested in a steel top section, even if it was just for winter use.
