Feral Youth Dilemma

I was just out tonight on my evening loop and as I came through a narrow gate there were some 8 maybe 18-20-year-olds all around the gate. I rung my bell to get through, they move slightly then a couple of them banged me on my helmet with the slap.

The younger, less responsible me with have got off and confronted them but the older me, thinks twice of the consequences. What should I have done?

Just to add I was not initiated as I had to finish going through that same point again – I more was angry as I would never do that to someone when I was young.

Seriously you probably did the right thing, it could of gone horribly pear shaped if you’d confronted them.

I don’t know but it may be worth reporting to the police if you can give a description? They might have form for being dicks.

Did the right thing really, makes you angry but by stopping and having a go, the best possible scenario is you’d accomplish nothing, and the scenario could get worse than that obviously.

Personally I would have not rung my (if I had one) bell but pulled up and said “excuse me lads”, I that it shows more confidence, if one still did hit me one the helmet I would have made joke about touching helmets / strange men that belittled the guy doing it  and would make his mates take the piss out of him.

if they weren’t physically blocking your way then keeping moving was probably the best choice.

Best way to deal with this type of behaviour is one at a time. You should have pulled off from the track when out of sight then backtracked to their location and settled in somewhere to observe them. Pick out one of the weaker looking ones to follow home. Once safe to do so capture him and take him somewhere for torturing. Once you have the rest of their names and addresses then you can visit them all one by one and icepick their spines.

That is terrible but why aren’t the entire community do something about it?  The community can put pressure on the police or the council or the politician in that constitute to take drastic actions.

Unless the community come together to confront them they will get away with their actions.

In Borneo, different culture and country, we have village head or community leader to deal with such matters and if that fails the entire village would pay their family a visit (only as last resort).  However, our police are rather good in dealing with this sort of stuff and guarantee no more further issues.

Not a very good comparison, for one the police are stretched in the UK, so depending on exactly how ferrel these youths were, 8 on one, he could have taken a bruising and ended up sans bike and that would be that.

Granted it could simply be a bit of bravado and piss taking, and nothing more but you don’t really know.

as i cycle a lot of towpaths and sustrans routes, i usually come across gangs of young teenagers, just like i was at their age, i always slow down and say excuse me or hello to them , and 99% of the time they move , and some have even said thank you for alerting them to my prescence as some old blokes and women ride fast at them shouting abuse r reporting them to the police that then come out and have a chat.

Strangly ganfgs of mioddle aged and elderley walkers seem to ignore my pleasant hello or thankyou, and some have even accused me of ringing my bell furiously and with anger, sadly somebody nicked the top bit of the bell leaving an expensive light and camera on the bars while on the mersey ferry inhabited by older persons that day.

A lad I knew years ago (70’s) was once accosted by a bunch of skinheads on his way home from the swimming baths in Durham, unfortunately for them he had a good memory for faces, & seeing as how they were local to him it wasn’t hard to ‘bump’ into them individually afterwards. That’s the sort of thing I’d do too unfortunately. My brain would be having a quick conversation with itself along the lines of

“Go on, say it, it’s really funny”

“Yeah, but we might get beaten to death”

”I know, but it really is funny”

I once took a bit of a pasting from three older kids when I was about fourteen. They hassled me for some reason, I said something amusing (to me) and they gave chase. I was quicker, but because I’m not right I came down with a fit of the giggles and therefore couldn’t run properly.

They are not from our country.  In fact, we have many of people from all over the region in Msia legally, illegally etc … We treat them the same as we treat anyone else.  In ASEAN we deal with issues our ways. Not the western ways.  West has no say whatsoever in the matter of ASEAN.  Stay out and stay gone in matters relating to governance.  However, if the west wish to do business they are welcome.

p/s: we don’t have Rohinga in Borneo, it is advisable not to relocate them there as other tribes might not be so welcoming. We have tribes from the Southern regions from neighbouring countries and they are not people you really want to mess with put it this way. Seen conflict in spice island?
