external BB bearing removal tool

i have seen them on phil wood website and enduro website, is there anywhere you can by them cheaply or a tool which does the job just as good for half (or more) the price??
i dont want to spend hours punching the bearings out and then faffing to get them back in, the tools look just the job for easy out easy in,

any advice, open to good bodge ideas too..

I made mine. Dead easy if you’ve access to a large nut & bolt & a lathe.

The BETD ones are very good and easy to use, but are not on the website. You have to ring them up.

Funnily enough within the last 1/2hr,i’ve replaced a pair of bearings in an external bb.
Not having the proper tools I used a 1/2 drive 21mm socket,short 1/2 drive extension,rubber faced mallet.Knocked out the bearings using the socket,pressed in the new bearings by initially lining up the bearing in the housing & then placing the assembly in the jaws of my B&D workmate,(Don’t have a vice!),& then tightening the jaws,then pressed the bearing in the rest of the way using a 27mm socket,placed between the jaws & the bearing in the housing.
In fact its took me as long to type this as it took to do the job!

Can’t remember the exact £££ details, but when I rang for the tool I was offered a free tool if I bought (I think) 5 sets of Enduro bearings. Clubbed together with my mates, and replaced my own bearings and effectively the tool was free.

Gaz, im confused to how you drift them out with the 21mm socket as the internal diameter of the bearing cup is the same as the inner race of the bearing meaning you can’t drift or press it out..? which cups were you using?

Te BETD tool has a pair of “pullers” on a spring that fit over the bearings. You place the cup & spring onto a supplied base, then place a drift through the axle hole, onto the top of the spring thing, and hit it! The bearings just pop out. There is a separate drift to knock the new bearings back in. Piece of cake.

Sorry,the cups that I put the new bearings in today were Superstar ones,& the 21mm socket easily dropped in & sat on the bearings inner race,so’s I could drive them out.

However,a few months back,I did the same replacements to some RaceFace cups,& I was able to drift out one side only using the socket method,the other side was the same i.d. as what you are saying.(Strange,that).
So I had to knock it out using a screwdriver & hammer,which was a right pita!

The replacement bearings that I use are numbered 61805-2RS.You still need to use the plastic top hats.

ah i have some ‘barely used’ SSC BB bearings which need replacing 😡 i may drift them out tonight see how i go..
the BETD tool is sounding good atm.

ordered the buy 5 sets of bearings and get a free tool from BETD this morning, very friendly and helpful guy there.

the SSC cups were indeed a p.o.p to drift out, it makes you wonder why shimano have designed their cups to be a PITA to remove/reinstall bearings eh 😉
