Anyone recommend a good Edinburgh dentist? Ideally in the south or west of the city. Doesn’t matter if they are NHS or private, as long as they are good (I’m a bit rubbish with dentists).

I use an NHS one on Warrender Park Rd – Nice practice but my dentist is a bit of a sadist – very heavy-handed but she does a good job (only had check-ups, nothing complicated).

Ta TJ, but to be honest I’d prefer to get one in the south-westish sort of area. I live up in Colinton, so it would be much handier. Thanks for the offer though.

Thanks Garry, though “sadist” isn’t the first word I want to hear when it comes to dentist (-:

Someone else recommended the Links Dental Practice just round the corner.

Links Dental Practice – just down from EBC. Dunno if they are still taking on patients though. Been going there for 15 years or so?

Edit: LOL – I just posted that as you were posting yours!

The one in Slateford Road- er, think it’s Slateford Dental Practice- are good. Seen a couple of their dentists now and both were excellent.

David Glavin left my practice to start this place (http://www.haymarketdentalcare.co.uk) . He only looks about 12 but actually seemed to be very competent and always treated me well – despite my distrust for anyone who at 17 decided to spend the rest of their life looking in people’s mouths. We are talking root canal and wisdom tooth stuff here – so not just a nice little check up.

I work at HW and we have a dentist surgery on campus, run as a sideline by Colinton Dental Practice. Originally I was dealt with by Duncan Sandland, who now works at the main practice, who I would recommend highly. Really helped me overcome some fears acquired through having a smashed tooth pulled by an incompetent dentist. If you wanted to try the offshot practice on the university campus, it’s not bad and actually had NHS places available a few months ago. It’s had some really excellent dentists in recent years, who have treated more smashed teeth well (hmm, sounds like a recurring theme), but I have yet to test the new ones…. thankfully

Barbour on Mayfield Rd, gone since 1993, been great, no idea if they take on NHS (which is what I am), and their upselling is anoying, but great care IMO, having tried a few others when I lived away.

    Hi Kenny

Bite Dentistry – used to be in Morningside (actually) now in Lauriston Gardens region can’t quite remember. Private – awfully good especially if you are a bit soft, they numbed my gums before injecting the local for goodness sake !

Which reminds me must get a check up and the coffee stains expunged.

(and the boss is a lovely Irish lady if that helps, all the staff seem to be women too, for some reason I find that quite reassuring)

Cheers for those replies. Plenty of food for thought there (though obviously not sweet, sugary food). I’ll check a couple of them out and see who are all taking patients.

Hels, despite the fact I’m a complete male chauvinist pig (as you know) I much prefer woman dentists too. Much more reassuring and usually don’t expect you to “take it like a man and stop whining”. I’ve never had a male dentist say that, but it’s been implied!

If it’s sexy dentists you’re after, try Brighton Place Dental Surgery in Portobello.

My dentist is Portuguese. Oh-so-hot and she sounds nice while counting your teeth.
