does lily allen have any talent?

mudsharkFree Member
A lot of people have crap taste – doesn’t make her great just because she sells records. Anyone still listen to Five Star of Bros? Indeed there are many great albums from the past that don’t get heard by the majority of younger people because they’re not pushed but they would sell – or maybe not as they’re not cool? I dunno!
I_did_dabFree MemberI saw her in the pub at Heathrow terminal 5 a few weeks ago. I couldn’t help thinking that if she was really famous and talented, she’d have been in the VIP section…
coffeekingFree MemberPersonally don’t think I’m naive – I am aware of the various influences (PR, cash, fame etc) but just dont think it explains this case. She has a marked ability to write songs that are catchy and sings those songs fairly well (how she sings them is personal taste). The fact that she appeals to enough people to sell the records gives her a marked ability in an area. That is the definition of talent. People dont just go out and buy records because they’re well marketed, they only buy records that they enjoy listening to. She has a talent for producing music that people like, this cannot be argued.

Only if she let the fame go to her head.
simonfbarnesFree MemberI couldn’t help thinking that if she was really famous and talented, she’d have been in the VIP section…
the famousest person I’ve ever met was Alan Bennett – but unfortunately Clapham (in Yorkshire) doesn’t have a VIP lounge (or even pavements) so he had to walk on the road 🙁
stilltortoiseFree MemberPeople dont just go out and buy records because they’re well marketed, they only buy records that they enjoy listening to
God Help Us. I thought that WAS the only reason we have so much rubbish in the charts
mudsharkFree Memberthey only buy records that they enjoy listening to
Really? So many kids buy stuff because their friends do and the bands are deemed the ones to like. My sister years ago was a fan of the Spice Girls as were all her friends, but then they all decided they were rubbish at pretty much the same time.
WoodyFree MemberNot fussed about her one way or the other – never was or will be the type of miusic I listen too………..
…..however, after seeing her ‘livelounge’ set at the R1 Big weekend on tv, I would like to pay tribute to the highly talented producers/engineers who make her recordings sound like she hasn’t caught her fanny climbing over a gate !
kimbersFull Membercoffeking you are digging yourself in deeper
simon cowell is sooo fake it calls into question any of his protege’s actual talent or genuine ability in my opinion
BigDummyFree MemberI think we are round in a circle on this. I am not sure that the OP’s question was “does Lily sell numerous records?”, I suspect it went to whether she would sell lots of records if the record-buying public bought records on the basis of musical talent. That in itself carries the assumption that musical talent can be objectively separated from whether audiences like the music or its success, which is of course highly debatable. 🙂
Gary_MFree MemberDoesn’t really do much for me, lately she seems to be sounding axactly the same as kate nash, not only the voice but the music as well. Looks and sounds all right though if that’s your thing. She looks and sounds a good laugh though and is harmless.
Bet she doesn’t spend her days on a mountain bike website for men of a certain age though.
ransosFree MemberAnyone who can sing a little, and is reasonably good looking can be turned into a pop star. At least Lily Allen has bothered to be a little different – doing her own lyrics and being a bit more individual than the usual pop clones. Let’s face it, pop music has never been about natural talent.
crouch_potatoFree MemberOf course Allen has ‘talent’ in the most abject sense of that word. That some find it acceptable to defend her as an artist verges on the unutterably depressing. Worse, it also took an unreasonable amount of scrolling down to find the first post that even begins to gesture towards the depths of her inadequacy as a vehicle for anything remotely resembling pop music (thankyou Rusty Spanner for restoring my waning faith in humanity).
Allen stands for all that is lamentable in the world today.
ransosFree MemberAllen stands for all that is lamentable in the world today.
That’s what I love about STW – everyone’s sense of perspective. 😉
stilltortoiseFree Membercrouch_potato, I think you’ll find that would be ATILITWT and not ALLEN as suggested
WoodyFree MemberAllen stands for all that is lamentable in the world today.
Have to disagree with that one CP. At least she gets off her arse and actually does something to earn a living in a reasonably inoffensive way. There are numerous more deserving of the Rusty Spanner wrath.
coffeekingFree MemberReally? So many kids buy stuff because their friends do and the bands are deemed the ones to like.
I obviously skipped that fad then, as did most of my mates. We bought things that we heard and liked, if we heard it and didnt like it we laughed at it, regardless of what our mates thought. In fact we used it as ammo in insults, but we would certainly not have bought something we didn’t like. If kids are THAT impressionble these days we have no hope.
Regardless, the OPs question was does LA have talent. Yes she does, as mentioned she can write catchy songs and get people to buy her albums. Those are talents. They may be scorned by musical purists but that is irrelevant. If the OP had asked if she had singing talent we could have come up with a more definitive answer..
Regardless I find her tunes catchy but not overly amazing. I’d not buy her tracks but I dont turn them off when they come on the radio.
stilltortoiseFree Memberdoes lily allen have any singing talent?
and of we go again. Yay!
crouch_potatoFree MemberAt least she gets off her arse and actually does something to earn a living in a reasonably inoffensive way.
Funny, that brings to mid a certain Ms Allen…
” I just want to make some money, yeah?… I’m gonna retire at 25, yeah?… Just ‘cos your mum was too lazy to get her fat arse up off the sofa and make some cash…”
Even without such outbursts (after all remember, she has had a trying upbringing) her utterly glib, me-me-me emotional patois and musical paint-by-numbers is vacuous dross.
I’m not sure of the appropriate emoticon for slightly tongue in cheek hyperbole (see also previous post)/you get the gist of things… 😉
horaFree MemberI know its against the rules to post ‘would you’ threads but can I just say Lilly Allen doesnt do anything for me (but I would still….flash grenades/Uzi etc)
stilltortoiseFree MemberI can’t resist jumping back into this again. What I like about Lily Allen is the music. Not the lyrics, which are naff, not her voice (although I do find it quite endearing) and certainly not her personality. However the production is great. It reminds me of hip hop, where the producer is king and the artist incidental. Dr Dre? DJ Muggs? Anything they turned their hand to turned out great, regardless of who was actually rapping over the top.
simonfbarnesFree MemberAllen stands for all that is lamentable in the world today
hmmm, sense of proportion failure. Before I started getting my knickers in a twist over harmless musicians we’d have to have solved starvation, poverty, racism, genocide, totalitarianism, depletion of resources and planetary devastation.

Not disagreeing with you there CP but I can’t work up any enthusiasm one way or the other.
For truly vacuous dross you need only look at the input from the poster immediately after your last post. 🙄
PeterPoddyFree MemberLordy, there’s some jaded old moaners on here isn’t there. You lot should listen to the blinkered crap you spout.
🙁
crouch_potatoFree MemberPeter and Simon, relax, you appear to have missed the
I’m not sure of the appropriate emoticon for slightly tongue in cheek hyperbole.
What has happened to the stw of days of yore? Halcyon days descending into incendiary diatribe merging with reams of intolerant bickering, complete lack of perspective and self indulgent meanderings… Lily Allen of all subjects is surely ripe for this kind of thing.
BigDummyFree MemberBefore I started getting my knickers in a twist over harmless musicians we’d have to have solved starvation, poverty, racism, genocide, totalitarianism, depletion of resources and planetary devastation.
This is a noble ideal. However, you are not going to see any of those things solved in your lifetime. On the other hand, we can probably finish despairing of Lily Allen before tea-time, and do Kate Nash this evening, leaving tomorrow free to despair of Lady Gaga and Leona Lewis.
Go for the quick wins! 🙂
PeterPoddyFree MemberI’m not sure of the appropriate emoticon for slightly tongue in cheek hyperbole.
Oh, I can work out who’s tongue is in the ir cheek alright, but mention music on STW and you always get 2 types of people posting – Those whos musical taste ended in 1979 and only listen to crusty overblown rock bands and look down on everyone else, and those who only listen to stuff nobody else cares about just because it makes them look cool and alternative (FFS there’s a thread going about Kraftwerk! They were talentless-electronic-dirge crap of the first order 20 years ago. Now just old talentless-electronic-dirge crap)
The very worst are New Order fans. Utter, utter bilge. And yes, I’ve had the misfortune to see them live. What a load of depressing tripe. They really have no talent, yet are worshipped by the indie masses. Why?
For the record, I like anything really. Rock, punk, ska, pop, female vocal, classical, proper rock’n’roll, some dance, hip-hop, new, old….Bluddy anyhthing.
What I don’t like is people that stick their nose in the air and pretend that because they ‘know what they are talking about’, a certain artist is rubbish.Rant over. As you were.
(And I didn’t even mention Radiohead fans…..oops 😉 )
EDIT – This is what I’m talking about –
A lot of people have crap taste – doesn’t make her great just because she sells records
Who the hell are YOU to tell me my taste is CRAP???!!!!
Stick your opinion where the sun don’t shine, halfwit.WoodyFree MemberPP
I was almost with you there until you mentioned thst you actually listened to that steaming pile of poo which makes the likes of Lily Allen et al look talented ie. C + W, then you went and rubbed it in by dissing Radiohead fans……………..
I’m wounded ………………………………deeply

😆PeterPoddyFree MemberC&W is great fun, makes me laugh! Spent 2 weeks driving round the States singing along to it. Fantastic!
🙂I once bought a Radiohead album (The Bends I think) Listend to it once and swapped it for a Paul Weller album. Much better!
P.S. – I never like Paul Weller, until I saw him live. Stone the crows, that man is good!
BigDummyFree MemberPeter and Rudeboy are stylistically very different, but many of their posts are very similar. 🙂
PeterPoddyFree MemberActually, the list of some of bands I’ve seen live is quite varied –
Status Quo
Green Day
Bjork
Fun Lovin Criminals
Chemical Brothers
Symposium
Prodigy
No Doubt
Travis
Save Ferris
Garbage
Skunk Anansie
Snuff
Eminem
Cypress Hill
The SelectaPick a musical taste out of that lot, if you can!
🙂WoodyFree MemberPP
Heavy’ish slant to those !
Fair enough, I’ll confess to seeing Barclay James Harvest and The Stranglers (in their heyday) on the same night + cranking up Lady Gaga whenever she comes on the radio 😯
thisisnotaspoonFree MemberI’m sorry, I got to that picture on the first page, dribbled a bit and didnt read much after.
nickcFull MemberPick a musical taste out of that lot, if you can!
Dull, and a bit M.O.R ?
Sorry, you did ask.
jon1973Free MemberAllen stands for all that is lamentable in the world today.
So we have MP’s screwing us from all sides, chavs making a career out of being on the dole, the banks bringing the worlds finance system to it’s knee’s, kids getting stabbed on the streets, illegal wars for oil and it’s Lily Allen that stands for all that is lamentable in the world today?
FFS 🙄 Get a grip man!
mudsharkFree MemberWho the hell are YOU to tell me my taste is CRAP???!!!!
Stick your opinion where the sun don’t shine, halfwit.Did I say your taste is crap? I’m saying that just because something sells well doesn’t make it great – the biggest selling papers are crap compared to some of the others.
rOcKeTdOgFull Memberdunno if anyone has mentioned it but Lily is on the graham norton show tonight

The SelectaIn virtual terms, PP just walked into the room wearing a beige cardigan and slacks, said ‘Hey kids, isn’t Lily Allen great’, and proceeded to dance in an embarrassing way. 😆
Pick a musical taste out of that lot, if you can!
And I agree with Nickc – definitely M.O.R.
