After posting this the other day

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/wheel-rebuild-are-the-spokes-supposed-to-protrude-through-the-nipples

And seeing the general concensus was that it wasn’t the best re-build ever i took the wheel back in today to ask them about it…

    Apparently it’s fine…. 😐
The spokes that are almost proud of the rim bed won’t cause punctures and the ones with hardly any thread engagement won’t be weaker as a result….

I said i wasn’t convinced and none of the other wheels sat in the garage look like that. All 7 of them.

But nope, it’s fine……but if i have issues with it (i.e. spokes snapping) they will rebuild it for me.

Wasn’t sure how to proceed really, so I stood there with the most unconvinced face i could muster before taking the wheel and telling them i will try it, but that i am still not convinced…

Need to get it back on the bike and give it a bit of a workout. Just hope it ddoesn’t fail at the Twentyfour12!

Rim tape deforms into the spoke holes spokes rub through tape bang. I wont be getting them to build me a wheel thats for sure.

parkesie, I agree but they were convinced it is fine and I didn’t really see how I could argue otherwise, given that they are supposed to be the experts!

They did my back wheel last year though and that’s spot on. Different bloke in the workshop, I think.

Annoyingly I have been running this wheel tubeless with electrical tape on the rim and that does deform into the rim holes quite a bit. Pretty sure with these spokes, that wouldn’t work for long before failing…

Short of going in and demanding they re-do it, I’m not sure what I can do.
Pretty miffed about it to be honest…

That is disappointing. I appreciate it’s tricky to argue the point. If you knew wheel building in an equal footing, you wouldn’t be there. Run it, first time the spoke pops the tape, head back with a big, smug “told you so” grin.

I’d be tempted to name them as well.

Not good to hear they wont do anything about it….
If that’s their final word and they wont budge then use them and if you get punctures from the spokes take them back and you’ll have evidence that they were a crap build and get them rebuilt or refunded…..
    Good luck.
    What’s the shop then????

Yeah, Onzadog….exactly. Hard to argue without sounding like a whinging customer.

They have fitted some really thick plasticky Mavic rim tape (yellow). Not sure whether to leave that in and stick a tube in or take it out and re-do it tubeless. Don’t think I’ll get the Mavic tape sealed at the edges to run that tubeless.

Knowing my luck, it’ll be fine until 1am at the 24/12 and then puncture while on a lap….

Dunno about naming them. Tempted to, but dunno.

Name them! They’re quite happy that their workmanship is sound,so why not? Anyone wanting a wheel built, knowing the builder stands proudly and squarely behind his work, will know where to go!

If you want to run it tubeless, you’ll need to take the mavic tape out. I guess the sooner you try it, the sooner you can find out.

As for naming them, don’t think of it as doing them a diservice but doing fellow riders a service.

Honestly I thought the build was a bit shonky but functionally fine. There’s plenty of thread engaged, and the spokes don’t look like they will protrude into the inner tube. I’d just ride it.

I’d happily ride a wheel like that – wouldn’t want to give it to a customer, but as long as it’s tight and true it’ll be fine.
