On the interior shot you think the crash has finished but it just keeps on going and going and going. Amazing to see them both getting out at the end like they’ve just parked up at the shops!
That was, relatively speaking, a really nice high speed crash!
Lots of relatively small hits, spread over a long period, so no massive deccel or cabin intrusion.
I’ve actually seen much worse in my time working in the WRC, probably the one we all went “wow, how did they walk away from that” was Petter Solberg’s meeting with the infamous hinkelstiens on the Rally of Germany in 2004:
When we inspected the car at Prodrive there were a few cracks and breaks in the cage that simply would not have taken another impact without significant and probably fatal cabin intrusion. After that event we actually redesigned the cage and composite side protection to attempt to put some more strength in certain critical places….. (16 years later i still get a cold chill looking at those pictures of his wrecked car again)
I’m pretty sure the ones that the drivers dread are the ‘boooooomf’ then nothing crashes
Yes, this. I had the pleasure of slamming at a relatively modest speed sideways in to 14” curbs at Millbrook proving ground in an Escort Cosworth in the late 90s. The deceleration force tucked the wheels under the car and jarred by back sideways. Can still feel discomfort occasionally now.
@maxtorque – I also navigated for Chris Griffiths as a one off* when he debuted his ex-Prodrive Legacy K88LNX which I think had been Alastair McRaes Open Championship car. Stunning in every way, a fantastic build from Prodrive.
In Solberg’s crash it’s very sobering to hear Phil Mills response to Petter. His voice is noticeably different, stunned/drunk sounding even, as a result of the colossal impact his side of the car has taken. So, so lucky.
Yup. Remember that we’ll @maxtorque.
The second curb Tommi hits at 1m50s is the one that we clobbered except we were coming in the opposite direction, down the hill. It bloody well hurt.
Ref the copper at the end, “we can’t be letting an unroadworthy vehicle on the road”, wouldn’t it have been a better outcome if he’d just covered him as an outrider as he drove a few miles down the road to his chase car or service crew?
Appreciate that Tommi still won the ch’ship.
On a side note….is it me or is the coverage on red bull TV much less this year compared to previous years? Only 14 or so mins for the Saturdayday highlights. I’m sure last year it was 30min each day.
Also there are a lot less drivers this year. Really only 4 guys that will win each round. I remember the years when we had subura., Mitsi, Toyota, plus others. Not any more. Probably as it’s crazy expensive now. Real shame – it’s getting a bit boring now I think.
