Hello.

Looking for a wee bit of advice please.

I can't get my bonnet open, well I can but it involves twenty mins of pushing and pulling the catch with a screwdriver, not ideal.

It needs fixed, but I can't remember how it's supposed to be, never really paid attention to how I opened it before.

When it pops with the key, which mine does, what should be next, is there meant to be a wee 'safety catch' like on most cars or does turning the key the other way do the second stage?

If its the former mine has fallen off and I need a new one, if it's the latter I need to replace the lock and catch.

Thanks.

@andrewh - I've got a Mk7 so different bonnet style.

Look on the Transit forum, someone must have had a similar issue:

You turn the key in the opposite direction to lift the latch.

get it lubed if its sticky.

As cbike says turn one way to unlock, other way to release safety.

you can buy complete replacement kits on eBay, buy one ASAP and fit it before you get locked out!

Great, thanks.

I'll get one ordered, due an oil change shortly and that would definitely be easier if I could open it. Will have mismatched keys but hey ho. Hopefully it will open a second time with the screwdriver method,, only discovered the issue when I tried to top up the washer fluid.

Actually, spent 20mins opening the bonnet, filled the washer, only had an inch left in the bottle, thought I might as well stick that in the wife's car, did that, then her bonnet wouldn't shut! (Spring gone on the lock, poked it back into place, new one already ordered) Had a snapped release cable on an old Land Rover 15yrs ago but then that's the second and third bonnet issues in the same evening!

The replacement kit comes with a bare lock which you build up to match your own key, really simple to do, just need to organise the pieces of lock carefully, plenty of you tube videos.

just checked, seems not for the Transit anymore, I did a c-max last year same type of lock and just built the lock up.

Transits are good as when your colleague drops and tries to catch the bonnet, they can reopen the bonnet using the key to remove their half severed finger/hand from the catch, rather than yelling for help as the release catch is in the footwell 🙂

Then I just have to bandage it up before taking them to A&E.
