Does anyone have a recipe for a homemade biscuit base that doesn’t invove smashing up palm oil, inverted sugar syrup and mono/di/multiglycerides somethingyourgrandmaneverhadinherpantry. I have time, patience and access to assorted natural dairy and grain products. Thanks STW.

You could crush up a pack of Digestives? They don’t contain any of either the real food components you list or the fictional ingredients you’ve just made up.

    Fraid not 😕

    Mc Vities Digestives:

Wheat Flour (54%) (with Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Vegetable Oil (Palm), Wholemeal Wheat Flour (16%), Sugar, Partially Inverted Sugar Syrup, Raising Agents (Sodium Bicarbonate, Malic Acid, Ammonium Bicarbonate), Salt, Dried Skimmed Milk

Mrs P (bonafide S. Floridian) said ‘find the recipe for graham crackers*, cookem and crushem up’.

*apparently what they use Over There.

    (Edit – found a recipe):

Oh well. Scary-sounding words aside, what’s the problem?

McVities have been leading the charge with sustainable palm oil for like a decade and none of the rest of that is particularly evil. Jam and honey are both essentially “inverted sugar syrup.”

You want a biscuit base, put down the tinfoil and make it out of biscuits.

Beats me, I’m but the (slightly spectral) messenger 😎

And – graham crackers for the real deal.

Lyles Golden Syrup (inverted sugar syrup) has been around for the better part of 150years and they had palm oil in ancient Egypt. As above honey and jam are inverted sugar syrups, so really the limes are just as “unnatural” as they weren’t cultivated until relatively recently. What type of heritage limes will you using rather the ghastly plantation grown ones?

Wife 9nce made an alternative cheese cake with Brazil nuts for the base and avocado for the topping. Obviously other ingredients were used but those seemed to be the key textures in it. Worked out really well but a lot less sweet than usual, which we liked.

There’s quite a few Keto recipes for almond-based cheesecake bases.

Make your own biscuits, crush them and you’re golden.

As above, if you have time then make biscuits then crush them. You’ll know exactly what’s in them that way.
    Sorted.

I imagine I could quite like a cheese cake with a granola base.

    Or a flapjack base.

Gingernuts taste way better than Digestives as a base in Key Lime Pie.

Its all about the base, a buttery biscuit base.

Make your own biscuits, use butter.

Thank you, p7eaven. The biscuit dough is chilling in the fridge. Do you or MrsP have a favourite key lime pie recipe from Over There?

Sorry eulach I just saw the recipe request 😳. Looks like you made something tasty?

Mrs P on the case now. I have to say that most Floridian/US food disappointments I experienced were branded versions ie fast foods.

But a few local/homemade recipes were sometimes so tasty that I thought my tongue was hallucinating. Notably:

    Pizza
    Key lime pie
    Pumpkin pie
    Conch fritters
Cuban roast pork, rice beans (Cuban-style)

I’ve yet to have a decent (or even slightly authentic) key lime pie from a UK shop.

Anyhoop, here’s one for next time 🙂 Hopefully better late than never:

*Note – apparently the ‘whipped topping’ is whipped cream and ’vanilla’ is vanilla essence. Some go for a more meringue topping. It’s simple, and I’m not sure how much of the flavour is down to authentic Key limes (or Persian limes) but she says you can ‘simulate’ the key lime juice with a mixture of 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice and 1/4 cup fresh lime juice.

Key limes are different-tasting than regular limes. Ironically, the ones you get in Florida are now mostly Persian limes. Interesting factlets:

    https://www.tastingtable.com/cook/national/key-lime-pie-difference-persian-lime-citrus

Key limes, also known as Mexican or West Indian limes, are more aromatic, with tarter and more floral juice.

② They are slightly yellow in color and contain more seeds.

③ Though less common in the U.S., they’re more prevalent throughout the rest of the world.
