    Without insulting the OP’s intentions..
I’m quite bullied up seeing a few R 5GTurbos too.. I love the fact that if you look at the list of cars in “our” early years were all fast(ish) hot hatches were we seem to have cut our teeth.. Oh the fun, oh the youthful grin.. I guess we still try in some way to ride our bikes like a teenager too hahaha, if truth be told.
You’re right about the turbo lag.. but the main problem I had was not driving it.. being busy back then I could only get into it once in every other weekend..
The Alfa(s) fell apart.. typical.. but I managed to restore the GT Junior which I totally loved. If there was one car I wish I could still own it’s that one.. 16v twin cam Italian howling heaven.. Utterly glorious.
However the 5 Sport Touring was without a doubt THE most impressive mile muncher “like ever”

Getting on for 20 years of driving for me now with a bit of a varied mix:

1978 Austin Allegro (in orange), suspension died
1985 VW Polo mk 2 (brilliant little car ignoring the rubbish brakes)
1998 Fiat Punto (super cheap lease)
1999 Fiat Punto (super cheap lease)
2000 VW Golf GTi Mk IV (ragged company car)
    1995 Porsche 911 993 (brilliant)
    2001 Subaru Impreza WRX (soulless)
2001 BMW E39 M5 (best car I’ve ever spent any time in)
2006 BMW E61 530d Touring (big, comfy, quick enough but not the M5)

Years are car reg, not when I owned them.

There’s no way I can remember all of them

Reliant Regal Rebuilt it when I was 16, sold it
Escort MkII 1.1 Popular The floor leaked horribly. No idea how it ever got through an MOT
Fiat Regata 1.3 First Company car. Rubbish
Citroen BX RD Great, relaible, did 100k miles in it
Citroen Visa 1.1 Basic and nasty transport
Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Another company car – Skip Brown tastic handling
VW Polo 0.9 Bought for me by then girlfriend….
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.3 ……crashed into by this car, driven by me
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 Dull. Huuuuugely dull
Fiat 127 1.3 Now a trainee accountant, this one was free. Did 20k miles before exploding
Land Rover 109 Station Wagon Slow, thirsty, appalling handling
Audi 80 Sport Stunner – VW GTI engine, went like stink. Stolen.
Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 Really good – radiator went on the day I was trading it in.
Ford Ka x 2 I worked for Ford. They were really cheap
Ford Fiesta x 3 As above
Ford Mondeo x 3 As above
Ford Sierra Car for the au pair. She destroyed it
Nissan Sunny 1.4 Car for the au pair. She destroyed it

Ford Escort TD x 2 More au pair mobiles, neither lasted long
Volvo XC90 D5 Did 100k+ in this, great car
Mercedes E300 estate Bought cheap, sold cheap. Amazingly solid engine and gearbox, crumbling bodywork
    Renault Clio 182 An aberration.
Cadillac Seville 4.6 Proper RHD car, silly quick between 90-110. Handled like a shed though
Audi A6 4.2 Loooovely but thirsty. I had a fuel card.
Audi A8 4.2TDI If someone’s stupid enough to give me one as a company car…just lovely.
Saab 9000 CSE Moon and back mileage when I bought it, sold for scrap after 40k miles
BMW E39 530D Touring Much loved, destroyed by an idiot hitting it.
Land Rover Disco 3 x 2 Apart from the fuel, servicing costs and reliability, just great
VW Passat 2.0TDI Utterly indomitable – now on 130k, almost nothing’s gone wrong

    My own cars…
    VW ’72 bay window van
Mini 35 – caged, tweaked engine, sump scraping the tarmac, etc. – M reg
    Ford Focus 1.8 – X reg
    Toyota Rav 4 5 door 2.0 – X reg
    Currently own a Mitsubishi L200 2.5td – 02

    Company vans…

Currently trying to persuade work to let me have a shiny new VW Transporter to replace the Vivaro 🙂

Driven about 50 other types of vans/cars though, everything from Land Rover Defenders to LWB high top Sprinters to Merc AMG’s and a sorted Nissan Skyline. Done pretty well considering I’ve been driving less than 4 years.

A few, in order of ownership.

Renault 19 16v – First car, I wonder if it’s even still alive?! J851VSX where are you now!
Renault Clio 16v – Great fun
Renault Williams Clio – Possibly the best hot hatch ever?
Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 – Scary baked bean tin, but fun.
Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 Turbo Technics edition – As above with added turbo!
Subaru Impreza STi 4 Type R – Great fun back in the day, especially with 390bhp.
Subaru Impreza P1 – Bit more in tune with UK roads, not as quick as the STi, but still made a healthy 350bhp.
Mitsubishi Evo 5 GSR – This was to be my track slag, fully stripped out, seam welded, full cage, 600+ bhp engine but I got bored building it.
Mitsubishi Evo 6 RS – Bought this while the other Evo was off the road to have some fun.
Nissan Skyline R33 GTR V-Spec – full nutter spec, 900+ BHP, at the time it was one of the most complete 33 GTR’s in existance. It scared the sh*t out of me every time I drove it (and made my wallet wilt at the thought).
Seat Leon Cupra R – Downhill from here.
Audi A4 Avant TDi – Oh dear.
VW Transporter T5 – Biking van!
VW Passat SE – The runabout!

I think it’s fairly apparent the point where I lost interest in cars!

To be fair I always had a company car pretty much from the Williams Clio right through to the Skyline, which made owning them as a weekend toy a little bit more bearable than running them daily.

1979 Opel Rekord. Auto ‘box, big comfy seats, like wafting around on a comfy sofa.

1977 Escort RS2000. Imagined I was Ari Vatanen in this!

1980 Escort RS2000. Happy memories of many a drive where I made, err, ‘good progress’ around the roads of the UK. Sold it ‘cos of pressure from ‘er indoors who hated it…BITCH!!

1981 Escort 1.3 MK3. Bloody awful, awful, piece of shit. The only useful thing that car ever did was to be scrapped & turned into tin cans..

1983 Talbot Horizon auto. ( No laughing at the back!!) Bought as a stop-gap as the tin can donor fell apart, & ended up keeping it for 2 years. It was, to my eternal surprise, a good car!

1987 Cavalier Mk2 1.6. Bought this as I had just started work at the local Vauxhall dealers, & it seemed the thing to do. Nowt special tbh, it just got us from a to b in comfort.

1989 Cavalier Mk3 SRi. Good, rapid car. 70mph on the m/way was seen as the minimum speed…

1993 Rover 1.4 16v. Came with the (in)famous K series engine, but I bought it at 20,000 miles, sold it at 61,000 & never, ever had a moments trouble with it.

1991 Ford Sapphire 1.8 Bought this on a whim at the car auctions as the Rover was sold to raise funds due to impending divorce. 158k on the clock, kept it for 12 months, & another bland, reliable car.

1990 Ford Sapphire 2.0 twin cam rocket ship thingy. Ace car, fast, but thirsty & a killer on insurance. Got rid when the head gasket blew..

1994 Rover 214 SEi. Another stop gap car that I ended up keeping for a couple of years as it was such a good reliable little thing.

1998 Rover 420 hatchback. Just getting into mtb’ing at this point & it was handy to cart the bike around in, but again expensive to run.

2002 Astra 1.6 estate. That was another bike influenced purchase. 3 bikes, 2 mates & me, a weekends away worth of kit, all inside the car. (I hate carrying bikes externally). Kept that 2 years, then it got written off by a wayward Saxo driver who thought that he didn’t need to stop at a junction….. 🙄

2004 Focus C-Max TDCI. Good, good car. Nice to drive, as comfy as owt. rear seats removed & a ‘Hatchbag’ liner in the back, good bike bus.

2005 Focus C-Max TDCI. Bought as a replacement for the previous one that was also written off. Same comments as above.

So, thats my car history. Currently car-less due to reduced working hours=lack of cash.. plus the cost of running a car was a large %age of my monthly spend. Got to economise somehow!

1995 Proton Persona 1.6 XLi Excellent first car, pretty quick and reasonably sophisticated, even had rear disc brakes, something contemporary 318s didn’t have
1993 Peugeot 306 1.9 XLD Shouldn’t have bought it but had to. Long story
1998 Ford Mondeo 1.8 TD LX. Very dull, but great in every other respect. Had it longer than all the others combined.
1994 Toyota Corrolla 2.0D (was given it, then gave it away a month later when I realised it was too small and I liked the Mondeo better, then had it back a year later when the Mondeo died but the other chap had let it stand too long and it failed the MOT and was scrapped)
2003 Hyundai Trajet 2.0GSi Now converted to bike van 🙂 Great in every respect other than fuel consumption…

My father gave me one like this. (1.3L 1967 VW Beetle)

Then while working abroad I got this (660CC) … ya rather (very) similar to the one smashed up / hammered by one Mr Jeremy Clarkson.

But when I have time I will build one up like this (probably with a 2.0L engine) …

However before that I might get an estate or MPV … oh well … 😐
