Planning to do a C2C route next year, and fancied crossing the widest point. Apparently that’s from St Davids Head in west Wales to Lowestoft in Suffolk. About 400 miles.

Anyone done this route? Worth it? Suggested roads to take, and more importantly avoid?

    Avoid Lowestoft…

    Sorry!

Sounds like an interesting ride – may have a look at that myself 🙂
And I second that comment on Lowestoft – if you have to finish there, the train station is very near the sea – get on a train out quick!

leave out St David’s Head and just ride Lowestoft. I’m there a few others if you need riding partners 🙂

A40 gets you from Haverfordwest to Oxford, but is busy + would be a bit grim road to ride along.
From this end I’d be tempted to head up the coast road via Fishguard + Newport (Pembs), then head inland to Boncath, Newcastle Emlyn, Lampeter. Then head down to Llandovery, up to Builth, then lots of options to get you over to Worcester way. Let us know when you’re heading off. If I’m about happy to ride St Davids section with you.

Thanks for the route advice and tips (although am now unsure about whether to avoid or embrace Lowestoft!). Don’t know that part of the world at all, and would want to avoid the busy roads – would rather take a longer, wigglier route if its quiet and scenic.

Got a winter to plan, thinking of doing it when we have longer daylight hours. Anyone is welcome to join me for all or parts of it.

Lowestoft is fine, and the roads and lanes to the west are quieter and more direct than if you head for Gt Yarmouth or Ipswich, say. If you want a bit more upmarket for the finish, maybe aim for the pier at Southwold for yuppie seaside fun. At the start end, I’d detour south early to cross at Pembroke Docks and head towards Tenby for a quieter route along the coast unless you’re set on Carmarthen/Brecon inland route. Sounds like fun though, I’ve explored both ends quite a bit, just the 350 miles in the middle that’d be new to me. If you want a laugh, have a look at Google map’s suggested walking route St David’s to Lowestoft!
