What balotelli did is an extreme, and awful, example of something which is a part of the game: competing physically for high balls. What he did should be punished and punished harshly but it’s something which happens, to a degree, in every single match.
Suarez took time out of the game to cause physical harm to an opposing player with absolutely no context within the game. He wasn’t playing football too physically, he wasn’t hacking or fouling, he attacked another player. It was less physically dangerous that what Balotelli did but it was also a million miles further away from the spirit of the game. Add to that the fact that it’s something he’s done twice before and it’s a particularly special brand of unpleasant.
