I need to replace the BB on my 2014 Wilier GTR. It’s got a Wilier branded FSA crankset, with what appears to be a MegaExo 8200 BB. At least that’s what the stamp on the BB appears to say, although looking them up, it really can’t be an 8200.

Whatever the case, I need a replacement and am looking at alternatives. First of all, there are A LOT of iterations of the MegaExo BB, all of which have similar prices (unless ceramic), and all of which have the same measurements (24mm axle; 86.5mm wide). So the question is: can I just pick up any of these and pop one into my frame?

But secondly, I came across this article from 2011, discussing FSA’s own new standard that appears to allow me to get something similar to a BB30. Here, though, the question is why, if the described system worked, didn’t my newer bike use it? And if it does work, and I can use it in my frame, would I need a new crankset?

Okay, I just discovered that it is a mega exo 6200 and NOT an 8200. So now I am wondering if the different mega exo BBs are interchangeable, and what other options I might have.

FSA bb/cranks are generally a PITA, they make lots of stuff similar but slightly different. (eg 24.07 rather than 24.00mm, hence why some FSA chainsets work ok with a cheap Shimano BB, but some would need hammered through to “fit”) Also some BB dust shields are flat, some have a lip depending on the chainset they are for.

As to why manufacturers fit certain chainsets; look shiny at a certain price point.
