Boardman Bikes – Boxed

I was wondering if you guys could help me, I intend to buy a Boardman HT Comp later this year and I was wondering, when you order them boxed, how do they come?

How assembled are they?

If its anything like Evans they come fully assembled with just the bars twisted. Got it delivered to work and it was a nightmare! Was expecting a box half the size and had to beg and plead with the janitor to let me put it in a cupboard. Sooo embarrassing!

Will they sell you them boxed? I thought it was a legal requirement that it had to be fully assembled. Mibbe they do that then just turn the bars round?

I am looking at an FS Pro. Really wanted to go in store and do the "touchy feely" bit but seems as though mail order is the only option.

All get great reviews and the spec is very high. I can always pop round to Chris's house if its not up to scratch!

Why is mail order the only option? Frankly I wouldn't trust a bike they've 'built' anyway, you may get lucky, but I'd want to get one of their bikes put together properly anyway.

OP – Front wheel will be off and tied with the handlebars around the frame. A box will contain the pedals/reflectors/and in some cases the front brake caliper. The seat post will be seperate as well. The bike should only take about 10mins to wack together, but allow about another 45mins to get everything tight and to allow any re-adjusting of gears

If you order the bike on line to be delivered to you it will be fully built and tested. All you will need to do is turn the bars. Yes the box is huge!

The 2 guys that build the bikes work in my office, they are fully cytech qualified (Chris Boardman was actually in the workshop a few weeks ago when the assessor was in testing the one guy) and have tinkered my Blur LT and my Voodoo D-Jab for me.
I would trust them more than my LBS with my bikes, if you want even more assurance let me know when you've ordered and I'll take some pix of it being built for you 🙂

I would never trust halfords bike 'builds' (then again i would check any new bike over no matter what shop built it). I bought a Boardman Race team Carbon a few months ago, the brakes werent set up correctly, seat post was loose, bike computer hadnt been setup correctly and service was poor. Someone else I know that bought a bike from the same store about two weeks after me (through the B2W scheme) had a crank fall off on his first longish ride even after they had come out to setup his bike 'properly' after various issues. They admitted liability on the cranks and he got a new bike and compensation.

I know this isnt the case with all Halfords staff, I know someone who works in a bikehut and he is very good at repairs and has a good overall knowledge but unfortunately my experience with them has been poor.

To the OP, you shold be able to have a look at the Boardman in a local halfords if you have one.

As above, I would never let any bike shop build my bike, I know there are some very skilled and knowledgeable people in Halfords, but I'd sooner know it's been done properly.

If you don't have the desire/skills to do that then fine, one would hope they're done properly, it's just not my approach!

Halfords at Straiton in Edinburgh had some on display the last time I was in.

I got my Rockhopper out of Straiton in 2006, couldn't fault the build whatsoever. I was in Halfords in Seafield a few weeks ago getting thread lock, and the fork on their Boardman Pro had a dust wiper sitting about an inch above where it should be.

I only have good things to say about Halfords at Hermiston Gate in Edinburgh. Friendly, competent etc.

mate of mine has/had a boardman full suss. The frame Cracked on one lap of the red run at stainburn and hes a steady away rider and rolled over the bigger jumps. Not seen him in a while to find out what Halfords/boardman had done to fix it for him. It was surprising to see as everyone as given them great praise. guess it was just one of those things.

Bikehut in Dorking has one model from most of the range, if not all as far I saw last time I was there.

The Boardman range are only stocked by stores with a BOARDMAN EXPERT and so far as I can tell, they are all built by the BOARDMAN EXPERT.

When I picked mine up, it was fully (and competently) built, bar a ridiculously long front brake cable. I picked up a Kraken for the wife at the same time and it was in a box, exactly as per 0091paddy's post.

I ordered one through a non-Boardman store after a Boardman store mucked me about. The head mechanic (not a 'boardman expert') built it up for me and I've had no issues.
