Bit worried. Had a short lunchtime spin on the road bike (not that high intensity and fairly nice road surfaces) and now have blood in my pee. Still there 4 hours later. Have had this happen once before a few weeks ago but that cleared up within a few hours (and have done a lot of riding since with no repeat until now.)

Anyone else have this happen to them? Guessing I should go see the doc tomorrow?

Could be gallstones, but either way docs asap.

Could be a simple bladder infection but a visit to the doc is a must.

It's not painful to wee, all a bit weird.

Go see a doc.

Shall pop down the surgery tomorrow. Worth going even if it's cleared up?

Mrblobby - yes.
Even if cleared up, it should be looked into (literally, looked 'into'...)

Well I did have some beetroot juice at breakfast but then I have that most days and don't get red pee.

Even if cleared up, it should be looked into (literally, looked 'into'...)

Prostrate problems? When you go for a wee does it take a while sometimes or shortly after having one do you feel like you need another one?

What the very appropriately name DrP said.

111 will probably send you a Emergency Ambulance if you ring asking about Haematuria, no I'm not joking.

Nope, nothing unusual about the wee routine. Only other issue down there is what I presume to be a small saddle sore.

When ever you have a catheter, they squeeze some anaesthetic stuff down the end of your knob, ayyazzzz!

I've had this before, the saddle can cause trauma to the blood vessels, scared the shiit out of me. Still have it checked though.

Mate has had a similar problem in the past. Riding can sometimes cause it.

However GET IT CHECKED!

Just to make sure it isn't any of the other possibilities.

I had similar after running a couple of years ago. Lots of possible causes (minor trauma, infection, kidney problems) so as above see your Doc to get checked out. In my case it was just put down to "joggers haematuria", but not until after I'd had an ultrasound and a camera up there to rule out anything more serious - all dealt with quickly and efficiently by my local NHS.

Well, when I eat even a hint of beetroot my pee is an alarming shade of red. Go see the doc and have a chuckle with him if that's what it turns out to be.

I experienced similar after running on a treadmill.
Had Hematoma in my bladder due to lack of fluid which caused the bleeding.
I was offshore at the time and called my doctor and he suggested I should get some antibiotics straight away to prevent kidney infection.
I couldn't get the antibiotics and ended up with an infection,it was very painful so yes go and see a doctor as soon as you can.

My suggestion is that you make sure you are not fobbed off by some generic comment about bicycle riding.

The golden rule with blood in urine is to get a scan (camera up the urethra) of the bladder.

Probably nothing to worry about but it is a golden rule and as such it needs to happen to rule anything non bike related out.

Whilst on this topic, does anyone have any recomendation for saddles that casue the least damage to prostate and the nerves on your perenium.

I've read that too many hours in the saddle can start causing "man" issues and having just bought a road bike (commuted for the first time today) am thinking preventative action in this area might be an idea rather than reacting in a decade if I have issues.

It's all about the angle. Make sure you are sitting on your sit bones at the back, not your squishy perineum.

I like Specialized because they seem to have been the first company to realise that not everyone's arse is the same size. I also go for minimal padding on the saddle and carefully placed padding on the shorts, because you don't want padding bunching up and squashing your perineum either. I used to suffer from numb willy but never do since sorting the saddle/shorts combo.

FWIW I use Asos shorts and a Specialized Toupe saddle, but there are tons of options that'll fit the above criteria.

Hi, I saw this post last night having just visited my dad in hospital. Not scare mongering but his symptoms started with what you have experienced.
Get yourself checked out for peace of mind if anything. Cheers

Blood in urine is a definite visit to the doctor. It may not be anything serious but it could be.

As has been said, get it looked into straight away.

Several years ago I didn't & the end result was not good (albeit I knew what caused my bleeding at the time). 😐

@ chilled76 - the single most important factor is the fit of your saddle. As Molgrips has said, Spesh (and others) have realised this applies outside of the pro-pelotons and saddle widths are varied. Either get along to a Spesh or Bonty dealer & use their arseometer to get your sit bones measured - this will tell you what the most appropriate saddle width is.

Once that's resolved, the angle at which it is fitted will help you get your weight onto your sit bones.

Went to see the doc and I'm now at the hospital getting some blood tests done. Apparently I have to see an urologist who will "insert a camera up the pen1s and a finger up the bum". Not sure if that is at the same time or not. Can't wait!

It's at the sma etime, whilst they make you have a carrot in one ear and a cucumber in the other.

Cheers for the comments on saddles guys. Anyone know a good dealer who can measure sit bones on the east midlands? Prefereably Notts/Derby

Not wanting to stress you more but worth saying when my dad was in his early 40's he went for a run and when he came back he wee'd blood. Turned out he'd had bladder cancer for a while, so be worth checking for that.

My Dad's over 70 now by the way.

Equally when I was in my 30's I had same symptom and obviously worried I had cancer like my dad but it was just a little kidney stone

Wishing you all the best anyway good luck

Funny that the doctor kept saying I was "obviously worried" about things like cancer even though I'm not. I would be if I knew I had it but at the moment it's just a bit of blood in the pee. No point worrying until there is something to worry about!

Blimey, I'd not considered cat Aids, now I am worried!

Having said that, a relatively tough turbo session done and no blood in the pee so far. Shall try and get out on the bike tomorrow and see what happens.

@mrblobby I can confirm that having regular prostate cancer checks it is no more pleasant with a 30yr French female doctor than a crusty old Brit. She actually tried to get me engaged in aconversation during the procedure, perhaps she though that would relax me but I was unable to speak after a certain stage/point/depth. 😯 Perhaps she just had a bit of a twisted sense of humour. In my case a full colonoscopy was more bearable than preliminary investigations, there is a lot to be said for general anaesthetic

I would say my thoughts are with you but I don't want to think about it 8)

Good luck

jambalaya, thanks, the doc did say that I would likely be put to sleep for the procedure, is this not the case? 😕

I certainly wasn't, for either. My previous comment re watching the footage 'live' was as far from flippant as it gets.

I had a colonoscopy a couple of weeks back...first 6-8 inches weren't bad at all...:-)

Not sure i'd like the camera up my boabi however, that may sting a little...

I've had similar experiances a few years ago, my Doc was an old man who looked like he should have retired 20yrs previous.. It stung a bit a day later, but nothing too bad.

Well I have my appointment tomorrow for the knob camera. Prepared for it to sting a bit but, for those who've had it done, will I be able to ride on the weekend or do I need to do some re-planning? I did actually consider riding to the appointment until mrs blobby suggested that might not be the smartest of ideas!

Presumably you'll be given a sedative and so won't be able to drive/ride home. I would have thought weekend riding might not be a good idea.

From the paperwork it looks like it's just a local anaesthetic.

Do remember to take the Picolax on the right day.

Thankfully none required!

Check about the driving thing though! If you are sedated then driving is a no-no.

I've had it done. They encourage you to drink lots after the procedure to prevent infections.

I almost passed out when urinating the first time after the procedure, but I think urinating was only painful/uncomfortable for about 24 hours afterwards

You should be OK to ride at the weekend.

I have two camera in the chap events, first was a full anaesthetic, most likely down the private healthcare. Second was NHS all the way and I got a local anaesthetic, it was most disturbing. I also had to have an ultrasound of my prostate done, not sure what was worse. The guy doing the prostate thing wasn't a very good shot, when he finally got it right my legs flew into the air and I almost hit him.

If it's any consolation you will not feel your knob for a day if you have the anasthetic, so make use of it during that time 😆

It took me 36hrs to get over mine properly, pee'ing was bloody sore but settled quick enough.

Riding? Hmmm I took a week off the bike.

I don't recall it being an issue - pretty sure I rode a couple of days later. TBH, in my case, the thought of it was far worse than the actual procedure. Possibly down to it being done as private but I'd hope the NHS cameras etc are the same.

Frankly, the camera isn't invasive so, unless they find a reason to not ride, you should be fine.

Had a cystoscopy (camera up knob) in the past. Its not pleasant but it's not painful. The worst part is lying in your own piss and the water pumped up during the procedure. It stings going in and then it's uncomfortable more than painful. My blood in urine was a kidney stone had torn down my urethra on passing.

They did another cystoscopy under GA to tidy my urethra up in my man sword.

I'm sure i read a couple of months ago that this was quite common amongst pros who ride Paris-Roubaix, all the jarring causing blood vessels to rupture. Best of luck with the procedure anyway.

Thanks. Stung a bit but not that bad really, just a little uncomfortable. Need to have it done again in 3 months 🙁

Was amused at the form they sent out asking if I'd need any special equipment such as a hoist. It's not quite that big 🙂
