Remember lighting most of those names in my first year at Uni. From memory it was only Neds we didn’t have pass through. Chumbawumba were great. Kingmaker simply the loudest gig I’ve ever been near. 140dB at FoH during soundcheck and over 130dB during the gig – it was like being beaten with sledgehammers (in a good way). But simply THE MOST amazing bass guitar sound ever (until the bassist cooked his valve powered box of tricks mid-gig anyway).

They even played at the mighty JB’s

That place and the original Robin Hood pub were brilliant live music venues.

blast from the past.. I’ve seen Kingmaker more times than I care to remember, they seemed to support every band going for a while. Couldn’t tell you one of their songs.

Dead on arrival, the 90s revival…

I take it you’ve not seen Cud recently then? As good as they always were – even the doubter I took along had his socks blown off by how tight they were and could still gig like they were kids.

I loved Kingmaker – had the “F&&k me It’s Kingmaker” t-shirt. Listen to em now and can’t imagine why I liked em so much!

99p for a pint in the Swan, blimey you guys must be a bit younger’n me then; Red Stripe in the Turf was only 71p a go, when I saw the neds upstairs at the Mitre (fell down them stairs a few times too!) Not a big fan of Neds or the stuffies, though saw a both a few times back in the day, much to the chagrin of my (rather younger) better 7/8th’s, who’s a big fan!

Dunno about the Swan, but I think the Turf’s been a Pizza express for years now. Shame, Mrs. H kept a good pub. (wanders off to clean rose tint from spectacles..) Happy days. 8)

    It’s a Carter lyric ❗

So bring me some aspirin, some rope and some Valium
Turn on the gas rings and call the Samaritans
And sit back and take in the gospel and bible

Anyone remember an all female group called Angelica? No me neither, but I play in a band now with the ex-drummer, and she never shuts up about it. 🙂

Just got tickets to see Jesus Jones, Miles with a bunch of people that weren’t in the Wonderstuff and Graham from PWEI on the same bill.

Stourbridge kid here as well. Seen them all more times than I care to remember in venuews of varying sizes – but can’t help think that the Stuffies died with The Bass Thing, and the Poppies aren’t the Poppies without Clint.

Big carter fan me. I saw them at some dingy club on the Cowley road in Oxford one year and 18 months later they were either headlining or supporting at reading. Must have seen them 20 times inbetween.

Naturally went off them when jonbeast departed.

Wasn’t such a big fan of neds but liked them still. Their music was very much of the era and should be considered in that context.

I particularly liked the Jesus and Mary Chain, the fall and a very young spiritualized.

I’ve ridden with the lead singer.

More of PWEI fan than Ned’s.

I find that Armchair Anarchist seems to have become more relevant as time has gone on

    I’m a marked anarchist
    Yes, I’m being totally honest
In fact, just the other morning
    I was planning a bombing
    Firstly, the House Of Lords
then on to the Brit Awards

    Singing
    “Bomb the idiots”
    “Bomb all the idiots now”
    “Bomb the idiots”
    “Bomb all the idiots now”

First gig ever was Wonderstuff with Neds supporting at Preston when I was 16. Saw NEDS all over the place. Slept in Glasow to see em at the barrowlands and faith No More were on the next night with L7 supporting.

    Some others :
doughboys (supported MC4 loads of times)
    Captain America
    Scorpio Rising
    the sundays
    Drive (No girls)
    Levellers 5
    Five thirty

Early boo radleys were good. The core of MC4, Senseless things, Neds , Kingmaker and stuffies were excellent for about 2 years. New FADS underrrated.

This. Times lots. For the first album anyway. Pity their later stuff didn’t work quite as well.

EDIT: oh, and if we’re all determined to reminisce ourselves into a haze of cheap hash and snakebite, let me also suggest Catherine Wheel, Chapterhouse & the Paris Angels

And the hot blonde indy chick was Tracy Tracy from the Primitives – not that Wendy James wannabe

I can’t believe the distances we travelled to go and see The Hunters Club. I think I still have my God Sent Us t shirt in the loft. All the junior Mission fans would hassle us for our shirts as Simon Hinkler wore one in a video.
Anyone remember Dawn After Dark? Not really grebo but they wore black jeans tucked in para boots.

Winston, you bastard! 😉 lucky git!
Crashtestmonkey,12rounds look interesting, I’ll check them out. I quite like some of NIN and Tool’s stuff, I tend to prefer my loud music to have a bit more going on than the usual metal, Gang Of Four being one such. Quite why they were never bigger than they were is a mystery to me.

I did go and see The Hunters Club once – think I bought a record and think I liked them but can’t remember anything else about them!

I’m currently listening to Curve’s Peel Sessions – loads of messing with feedback on Split Into Fractions – still sounds great.

Tindersticks are still one of my favorite bands (I’m a fairly happy bunny – honest!).

    Spacemen 3 anyone?

This thread brings back some memories. I have played with about 60% of the bands mentioned here on the same bill. In fact I played in a couple mentioned here. That Ned’s T-Shirt design was designed by the singer Jonn’s then gf who was doing the same course as me at Uni. The Lesbian dope heads moniker was also the idea of a girl I used to go to school with who ended up being a good friend of the band (she wanted to start a tribute girl band IIRC). Oh Hicksy does this jog any memories?

Not sure much stuff from that era has stood the test of time really… The Sundays have probably aged the best. Wonder if they’ll ever get round to delivering their 4th album!
My Dad enjoyed taking the micky out of me wearing a t-shirt with Lush on it!

I was the stereotypical indie kid of that era.
    cons/band tshirt & bob haircut.Ha.
Loved the stuffies & pwei & nearly killed myself travelling in a snowstorm to go and see the neds supporting the sandkings at huddersfield uni!Saw Cud alot and jesus jones, never liked carter usm tho’.
Can’t face the wonderstuff now as mh is’nt a nice fella.

EAT were the best band of the era. I can still listen to their stuff, whereas nearly all of the others sound crap.

    Ange Dolittle = underrated genius.

Don’t care if you disagree. I’m right.
