I want to fit a compact road chainset on my Voodoo Bizango

Anybody done something similar. I took it to my LBS today and they reckoned I’d have issues with a 50 tooth ring and also clearance between the crank arms and the chain stays.

Also can you use a roadbike front mech with an MTB shifter?

    Any help appreciated

    Cheers

I’ve put my old Sora crankset (39/52 IIRC) on my old Orange Gringo for commuting. Its square taper and works fine with a long BB axle.

No experience of road front mech and MTB shifter tho.

think you’ll find mtb shifter pulls more cable but if you are only going to use 2 rings you can just leave a bit slack to start with. Go to ctc website and in the the tech section there is a comprehensive article on mixing shifters and mechs etc.

I fitted a bontrager compact (mega exo) chainset to my Cannondale f500, chain rings were 36/50 and clearances were tight but no where near enough to worry about.

As for the shifter just use two clicks (or twist shift like i did), its no really an isssue unless you are constantly forgetting how many rings you have at the front and if that IS the case then just set the limit screws correctly.

Give is a go, should be fine, compact is more likely to work than standard 53/39

Oh and pretty much all lefthand shifters pull the same amount of cable and pretty much all front mechs use the same pull ratio too so feel free to mix and match.

The shifter works, but it’ll probably be fairly stiff – there’s a mechanical sort of lever advatage to long flippy/floppy road shifters apparently – more difficult to set up.

My SS runs the inner ring of an FSA Gossamer chainset and matching BB and the clearance (34T) is fine on that.

Sorry Ugly but road and mtb front mech shifters pull quite different amounts of cable and the corresponding mech geometry is also different to allow for this.
have a read of the link I posted earlier ..although you may need to scroll down the article to find the correct section .

A few years ago now on my old hardtail which i used to use for my 12 mile each way commute. I changed the bigger chain ring to a 52 from the 46 or 48 which ever it was, leaving the 2 smaller inners as they were. Takes a bit of setting up but they still change up and down easy enough. On the back i changed to 11-19 (7 Speed). That with 26 x 1.0’s it was a flying machine that used to piss off the roadies… 😀
