any reason not to buy a deore chainset……

to go on a cheap build mainly for training/hacks,or is worth paying double for slx also any issues with a 48/36/26 set up?

Sounds about just right for the job.

i bought a crankset last week, same as above… seems very nice.

Bought from Merlin for £55 or so with some discount they have on. Even came with a new shiny BB.

Is it the newer Hollowtech II type, ie with the external BB cups and the hollow BB axle? If so, I’d say go for it. Now’t wrong with Deore, I’ve used loads of the stuff on various bikes over the years and none of it has ever failed me.

Of course, it does depend what sort of riding your training/hacking entails and how big you are. I’m 11.5 stone wet through and don’t like my wheels to be more than and inch or two from the ground. If you’re (ferinstance) 17 stone and regularly ride off stuff higher than you are tall, you should probably look at something burlier.

The older Deore is fantastic value and all most people need. The older ones do still have the old style rings but nothing wrong with them:

I’m running a Deore chainset on my hardtail, it’s ace! Every bit as stiff as the SLX cranks on my other two bikes and within a packet or two of crisps difference weight wise. For less than £45 on the Rose website you’d be a fool not to.

I do think that 48/36/26 is a little tall at the top end, I’d substitute the 48T chainring for a bash guard and go all trailbikey.

Nothing wrong with Deore but worth thinking about gearing, depends on the rider & use if she likes spinning in low gear and/or if the bike is mainly for off road & hilly stuff then go for the 44/32/22 option instead.

If its mainly on road or fast flat stuff stick with the 48/36/26

how old is your daughter? Will the treking ratios be a bit high? Maybe look at the normal 9 speed ratio one with added leg protection that I posted above. Not pretty but stops horrible calve injuries from the outer chainring.

+ is it worth considering the 170mm cranks? Plenty of options to choose from in terms of length and ratio.

Thats exactly what i did, no need to spend anymore imo.

I got a set of older style with mtb ratios that now sits on my kaffenback. Don’t think ill ever change them. Those old octolink bb’s go on forever.

Edit: they were the 170mm ones as I’m a short arse.

I’ve got one of those HTII Deore chainsets. It’s been fine – other than weight there is absolutely nothing to complain about.

I’ve got a deore 48/36/26 version on my hardtail great for xc and commuting. I’ve also got a 36/22 double and bash deore chainset on my Five and it’s great, never had any problems. crosses fingers…..

Deore chainsets are fine ,the ht2 bottom bracket is poor and they fail in a matter of weeks

I bought a trekking one as a singlespeed chainset – sold the 48t (they’re pretty expensive on their own, so make sure you get a good price) and used the money to buy single ring chainring bolts, then turned my other bike from a 3×9 to a 2×9 with a 26 / 36 up front. Works a treat, and it came out lighter, even with the steel Deore rings.
The cranks are absolutely cracking value. I’d suggest that if you’re putting it on a child’s bike, make sure you get the crank length correct and choose the smaller ratios – I’d say 170mm, 22/32/44 unless your daughter is over about 5’7″.

[edit] – what Edric said above – make sure you get the BB shell faced before fitting. Improves the longevity no end. 🙂

I have a 590 on my hardtail which is fine and really not that different to the XT on my FS apart from weight. The only downsides are
1 BB rubbish but I have replaced with an XTR from Rose cheaper than the original in the uk
2 The black crank arms seem to scuff up very quickly and look old before their time. However this is purely cosmetic, they continue to function fine.

I have had that style deore crank for at least 2 years and it is fine. never had any problems with it. SLX looks better but I cant see any other reason to buy it over deore.

As far as strength goes I’m about 15 stone and tend to just hit things hard, I have never had any reason to worry about it breaking. The MK1 Saint on my other bike is noticeably stiffer but it is a lot heavier too.

I have a set on my Kona Stuff which is built up fairly burly and would never consider strength as an issue and I vary between 15-16.5 stone!

As I Ache says, SLX may look better depending on your taste/build (I have it on the ML8) otherwise no difference.
