My brother and his wife are thinking of buying a big house just outside Biggar on the A702. It’s pretty central among the 7 Stanes trail centres.

I think their idea is crazy, as they plan to give up their well paid jobs and open a nichey B&B.

Nichey is all very quaint, but you need bums on seats to keep the business viable.

I’ve seen a handful of what hotel / B&B threads on here, asking more specifically nearer Peebles.

I’m local, so have never had to stay overnight there, so am curious, just how many folk come up from south and stay over a weekend?

What sort of facilities would make you want to stay in Peebles rather than elsewhere. Biggar is a pretty Borders Market town, with good pubs and restaurants. The place has the possibilty for a self catering cottage and I heard mention of Yurts too.

Bike storage and washing. Wet room. Drying room. Simple but plentiful food. Powerful showers. Big lounge with open fires. I’m a fan of yurts too.

Thats exactly the sort of thing I’d want too. Somewhere warm and comfy and lots of good filling food.

Not sure I’d want to open it near Biggar though. Too far away from both the dumfries and galloway trails (especially Kirroughtree) and Glentree/Inners. I’d want to be closer to Peebles or down closer to Dumfries so you’d have Kirro, Dalbeattie, Mabie and Ae close, with quick roads up to Glentress and Inners.

T’husband and I stay up at a fantastic B&B in Innerleithen (called Glede Knowe). We went there for the second week of our honeymoon*, and have been back there every year since for a week to celebrate our anniversary. It’s fantastic because:

    * They welcome cyclists and walkers
    * They have secure bike storage and a power hose for bike cleaning
    * The breakfasts are amazing
    * The owners are friendly and welcoming
    * The house and garden is beautifully kept
    * The rooms are lovely and the showers are hot
    * They have an awesome mad-as-a-badger border collie

We were first attracted there by the location, welcoming attitude to cyclists and it looked good on the website. We keep on going back because it’s great.

We spend most of our days riding Glentress, with occasional diversons – on our first anniversary trip, we went to do part of the Southern Upland way, and ended up on Innerleithen red, the first year it had been downgraded from black. I’d been riding for about a year. I carried my bike a lot, and cried. It was ace! 😀

We sometimes also head west to the other Stanes for the day whilst we’re up there, like Dalbeattie and Mabie. Still not managed to get to Kirroughtree. 🙁

    * First week was in Cyprus. We’ve never been back…

Agreed Pete – Anyone driving to more than 1 7 stanes will want to stay near them not 1 hour away – they are relatively clumped together anyway (Tweed and D&G).

Nice pad though, I can see why they want to talk themselves into buying it.

Is there much in the way of trail riding near Biggar?

Biggar is not the right location I don’t think, loads of competition that is better placed.
