Opened the thread hoping Guy Garvey pretentious hour had been canned. It spoils my Sunday afternoon tinkering and fettling sessions.

I went to see Elbow live last month, and tbh he’s not much better at his own concerts…

I think Nick Grimshaw is doing a decent job. He’s a long way from his Radio 1 persona here and I get the impression he’s really relishing playing music he actually likes.

Specious – agreed. Was skeptical, but gave him a chance and he’s been… absolutely fine, TBH. Much like Lauren in that regard IMO. If he becomes more regular it’ll be interesting to see how he develops in the role. Remember George Lamb? I ended up loathing him by the end of his tenure at 6 Music…

Don’t hear his dad at all. Riley & Coe and Iggy for me.

I used to hate Gimmy on R1 – but I think he suits 6music better, prefer him over the nepo-baby Ravenscroft who hopefully hasn’t got his dad’s taste in women or how to treat them.

prefer him over the nepo-baby Ravenscroft

Just googled him, that explains why he’s on so much despite (IMO) being somewhat bland.

Is Lauren just on hols? I was aware of her condition but I’m sure she was still on after that was announced.

    Iggy for me.

I think he’s made some of the best and most-important music in rock history, but blimey he lays it on a bit thick on the radio.

Just speak normally Iggy, we’ll still like you.

Monday was a bit much for me I had to switch to R4 – I’ve realised that apart from a few tracks, that I can’t stand reggae.

Grimly has been ok, certainly better than I’d expect from a Radio 1 breakfast host but I do miss LaLa.  Hope she gets better and comes back soon.

Love GG and find him far from pretentious but each to their own.

One thing that’s always got me is “The Rebel Dread” has anyone else ever heard anyone else refer to them in in the same way? IE I’m Don Letts, also known as . . . . ” as if that means anything to anyone. Thankfully I can’t stand reggae so avoid the programme but can’t swerve the trailers.

^^ MAH’s mid morning music selection often seems like it was hand picked to suit the music taste of doley crusties who are just getting up

Think this has been mentioned before but I’ve been surprising impressed by Nick Grimshaw..

Ive always found him very irritating on other things, but he seems to have toned down the ott behaviour and has played decent stuff. I’ve actually preferred him to Lauren laverne. Hope he gets another show (ideally replacing the idiot, I mean the Hawk….alhough can’t see any way Grimshaw would want that early morning slot again).

Agreed that Grimshaw is less irritating these days, but also don’t find him in any way entertaining.

Which coincidentally is what I tend to think of Lauren Laverne.

I’m far less annoyed by Nick Grimshaw than I thought I’d be.

After another audio assault by MAH and her self-indulgent mega mix of pretentious experimental twaddle, I’d be happy for Grimmy to replace her when Lauren returns I think.

I like Grimmy, he’s a decent presenter and seems to be an actual fan of music, rather than just a presenter.

As an aside (and not a critcism) – was he always as camp, or has he become more so?

After another audio assault by MAH and her self-indulgent mega mix of pretentious experimental twaddle

‘In this moment’, I’d be more than happy for her to be ‘lifted’ from the schedule. Her endless stream of verbal guff grates on me more each day

Blimey, not often we’re in agreement!

Grimmy has been fine IMO. Agree with the comments that MAH would not be missed.

Astonished to learn recently that Nemone is a trained psychotherapist. She kept that quiet didn’t she?

Nemone bleets on about psychotherapy all the time.

    I quite like MAH.

Used to be a big fan of MAH but lately she seems to be playing more “challenging” stuff described above as “self-indulgent mega mix of pretentious experimental twaddle”.

I’d be less complementary and say that she is morphing into the radio equivalent of John Thomson’s ‘Louis Balfour’ character from the Fast Show.

I love the Hawk for balance @rockbus but echo your impressions of NG – he’s ben great and def has a place on 6M when/if LaLa returns (which I’m looking fwd to),

Re Chris Hawkins – was just coming on here to say how much I’ve enjoyed hearing him in the afternoon slot while WFH.  It’s been a nice afternoon.

I really haven’t liked Grimshaw standing in for lala (possibly my fav show), wish they’d given it to Nemone. Not a Hawkins fan here, but he is far better that CC at interviewing people imo.

I’ve listened to a fair bit of Grimshaw and think he’s been good.  He’s a better fit for 6 than Scott Mills anyway 🙂  I suppose its always been a bit of a grown up Radio 1 , starting with Marc n Lard.  With Radio 2 being the other fork in the road, if you like Coldplay and Dua Lipa

To be honest, I just want Shaun K back in his 1-4 slot.  Now that the tories are out he’s not going to breach any impartiality is he?

did anyone see the Alexis Petridis top 20 on Broadcast in the Guardian? (sorry I’ve got my 6 music dad hat on but it was great to see)

    I’m Don Letts

He obviously seems to think he’s famous. I’ve no idea who he actually is, but I’m sure there are some who put him on the same pedestal that he perches himself on. His self preening (and just his voice) grate on me almost as much as the Hobgoblin tbh. Not actually listened to his show though, just the trailers.

You’ve not heard of Don Letts?

It’s the Rebel Dread! How did you not know that?

Lol, I’ve no idea who is, either. But yeah, he sure thinks he’s famous. For what, I really have no idea.

    really?

He came to notoriety in the late 70’s as the DJ that single handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. It was whilst as a d.j at the first punk club ‘The Roxy’ in 1977, that Don adopted the punk D.I.Y ethic and begun to make his first film ‘The Punk Rock Movie’. Shot on Super-8mm it is the only documentary on the U.K punk scene w/ Sex Pistols-The Clash and many others. This led to a period directing over 300 music videos for an eclectic mix of diverse artists ranging from Public Image to Bob Marley. He then moved into documentary work covering the likes of Gil Scot-Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra, George Clinton and most recently Paul McCartney. Dancehall Queen (co-directedby Rick Elgood) shot in location in Jamaica 1997 was his first feature film.

His CV of film and tv contains a lot of good stuff. (Big Audio Dynamite was my entry point – the band he formed with Mick Jones when the Clash split up).  And his music selection is good.  But he’s the only person who refers to him as the rebel dread.

I do actually like the version of E=MC2 (featuring Emily Capell) by Gaudi meets Rebel Dread. Hadn’t made the connection

I, on the other hand, do. Having seen LaLa with Kenickie at least three times, she and the rest of the band were one of the funniest, and most fun bands I have ever seen, and Lauren is a very sharp, intelligent presenter.
I guess some people just can’t cope with intelligent people on the radio…

I know this comment is a day old, but can’t resist a point of order. Chris Hawkins is the worst interviewer it’s humanly possible to be! He clearly just reads down a list of prepared and largely unrelated questions and can’t develop a conversation off any interesting topics that naturally occur.

It’s infuriating when a guest happens across an interesting fact you’d like to know more about and he’s already moved on to “what’s your favourite breakfast cereal?” Man’s an idiot.

I agree, he’s exceptionally wooden when interviewing but, everything is forgiven for Names in Songs… 🙂

Have you heard Steve Lamacq interviewing? Does my head in. He utters a big long sentence, mostly about him but containing 3 or 4 half questions leaving the interviewee in total confusion.

Thankfully I’ve not heard Steve Lemacq do anything for the last 12 months. He is another one that gets on my crust.

I like names in songs Kayak, but you know he’s flogging that horse for the rest of his career into local radio obscurity, no matter how lame the content becomes.

The Hawks interviewing style is so bad it makes me think he isn’t actually doing the interviews. It’s like they just dub his boring questions over the top. I just can’t believe anyone could be so bad at failing to interact with someone they are really talking to and allow a conversation to actually happen.

names in songs is a great feature idea but his incessant going on about it and self congratulating approach even ruins that.

Don Letts does seem to be flogging his “The Rebel Dread” to death.  I’ve never heard anyone quote their nickname so much.

I really like Chris Hawkins interviews, I think he often shows real insight and appreciation for the interviewee.  Only thing I find a little irritating is that they often sound re-dubbed after the fact, so it sounds a bit like one of those syndicated interviews you get on local radio (or used to get on Steve Wright).  If the sound’s crap leave it in, that’s life and it’ll sound more genuine.

I really don’t get the hate for the fella.

How quickly people forget Liz Kershaw 🙁

My favourite nugget from her was when she was interviewing Nile Rogers:

LK: So, like, when you were in that Studio 48 and that….

NR: Oh come on, man!  It’s Studio 54! It’s very famous! How can you get that wrong?

LK: (defensively) well I weren’t there, were I?

    NR: (sighs) ok….

    but I’m loosing my edge

Actually that’s unfair, I quite like his show, he can call himself whatever he wants

More experimental techno for me. It makes a break from the indie guitar generics which 6 is prone to promote.

@kayak23, mid morning experimental techno… So true

Rebel Dread, he has his place (BAD), and the radio, but yes, anyone who needs to continually say, “Yeah, they call me….” says so much about themselves.

Names in songs.  Geez, i hope  Danny Baker is getting paid for that! (remember him doing it 25 years back) .

Grimmy? Never listened to R1, but the ‘was he always that camp’ comment only reinforced my belief again that STW are my bothers from other mothers.

I see Shaun Keavney is slowly getting his foot back in the door at the BBC – stood in for Liza Tarbuck the other week and now taking over the Friday Rock Show. Hopefully there’s a prime slot for him again in the future.
