Hoy surprised that riders from other countries going slower than they were. Is it just that the track’s quite slow (they mentioned yesterday that the air pressure is quite high), and GB riders have really upped their game?

Wouldn’t high air pressure make it faster?

So do we think the aussies are going to step up their game for team pursuit tonight?

I love the split screen, it looks like a computer game – little animated icons beetling through.
Don’t often see a catch, nice ride by the Italians.

Wouldn’t high air pressure make it faster?

No, you want low pressure. Less pressure = less air to push aside. That’s why they increase the temperature, it makes the air less dense. If you can combine that with some bad weather (low pressure) outside, you’re on for some very fast times.

I guess you screwed anyway if you’re slow enough to get caught but it screws you even more as the front guy can’t peel off while the other team is overtaking

This is a very important post. Seriously!

A pub. A pub showing cycling on the TV. Cycling. Being shown in a pub!

That’s awesome! The sport has come so far, it’s brilliant! I remember at school being seen as a bit odd* for riding bikes. Now it’s a sport that’s being shown in pubs!

*For so many reasons, bikes being just one!

Australia into the Gold/Silver ride – let’s see if they go against GB or NZ!

higher air pressure and the best skin suits – is that what France was griping about?

Me too. Mind, Australia had to work just as hard, if not harder, to get a time that was about 3 seconds / 50 mtrs slower.

To be fair,I asked them to put the cycling on. They were all asleep watching archery!
Anyway, what was brilliant was the round of applause the pub gave the world record!
They’ll be giving crisps away if there’s a gold medal!
    🙂

Cheers, I knew they increased the temperature but for some reason, (a lack of understanding of basic physics probably) I thought that was to raise air pressure rather than lower it.

Hence why tracks at altitude are faster as well, but then you have to balance lower oxygen levels and their effect on aerobic respiration vs the benefit of reduced air resistance.

Free crisps?! Which pub? *puts on coat*

An important balancing act for doing the hour record. For the TP (and pretty much all other standard track events) it’s so anaerobic that there’s not a significant disadvantage to altitude – at least not the sort of altitudes they build cycling tracks at.

So, Max Levi, you’re up against Jason Kenny in the sprint heats – the guy who’s just blown the Olympic record out of the water.

Given that we know Russia are doping, I imagine they’re both cheating.

We’re not even in this event –

That’s only because it would be embarrassing to win every single race.

China win in 32s. Jess Varnish and Beryl Burton would have done 28.
