Triple-clamping an enduro bike: Privateer 161 edit

by 18

Nice vid documenting the fork options of the Privateer 161 with Ferg Ryan. Some inspiring scenery and trails found in British Columbia on both a single- and dual-crown forks.

Privateer Bikes: “Making the trip from the South of England, Fergus Ryan found himself in videographer Brendan McClennon’s backyard of Whistler, British Columbia, where the lads set out to document the raw power and versatility of the Privateer 161, ripping around the stunning trails of BC, switching between the dual crown and single crown fork.

“This is where the duality of the Privateer 161 shines. Designed and engineered to handle the stress of either a single or dual-crown fork, the 161 can take anything you can throw at it.

“It’s not just a bike—it’s a true troublemaker, begging you to push yourself beyond what you thought possible. The Privateer 161 is built to handle everything from high-speed descents to unforgivably rowdy terrain.

“Whatever lies ahead on the trail, the 161 is the bike to take you out of your comfort zone and into the gnarliest ride of your life.

“Now is the best time ever to pick up our race-winning enduro and trail bikes, with both the Privateer 161 and Privateer 141 available to purchase now with 0% finance! Hit the links below to learn more!”

I mean, it weighs more than many DH bikes, so might as well put a DH fork on it and use it in that manner.

It’s something i’d love to have done with the boys bike and race Nationals on it, but never quite worked out as a plan.

Been running my G1 all year on triple clamps, thought I’d give it a go. Its a bit heavier, the CSU doesn’t creak, stifness is very good (event with weedy 35mm stanchions)

For winter its going on a weight loss journey, so single crowns back on and a host of other bits to make it more pedal freindly.

Have you weighed it like that? Looks like a proper steamroller.

Fan of the concept, though it could be better executed here, on account of the fork being a bit over damped.

    about 17kg as is IIRC

Have a set of Boxxer Rides on my Pitch, it’s a bloody hoot, bit lardy but I can always fling the noodles (Sektor RL) back on if I need to.

    If you can, why not?

That cassette isn’t very enduro sized!

Not much drop on the seat post either…

Gearbox, high pivot, dual crown – that only needs a 29er front wheel to be fully on-trend for the Pinkbike comment whores.

Rivals the Privateer on looks as well  😉

I’m giving my ever creaking Zeb’s one last chance. On the 3rd set…

When they eventually start creaking again which could be today/tomorrow or in six months I’ll sell the warranty replacement.

Then fit a Selva with Belva clamps to get the offset I want with a fork that doesn’t creak.

    Fork can take a 29” wheel 😉

Was ahead of its time *checks notes* 6 years ago, though the fork only came 3 years ago.

I did fit some Boxxers to an Intense SlopeStyle around 2010 too.

Next build will make up for it, promise 😉

    This is the way!

I was hoping ebikes would make running dual crowns more mainstream.

The weight penalty for me is equivalent to carrying a pint of beer on the ups. The grin this set up puts on my face on the way down makes it all worth while.

Yup, the world needs more dual crowns. Waiting on a set of Belvas for my Megatower.

Which to be honest, isn’t that bad.

I have been running triple clamps on my G16, then G1 for 2 years now, and wouldn’t contemplate going back to single crowns for anything over 150mm of travel. I did take mine down from 200mm to 180mm physical travel but soon went back to the full 200mm, 1 psi per kilo in the main chamber with that +20psi in the ++ and the negative set so they static sag to 180mm.

From 100km xc rides to 1500’ climbs it rides amazing, searing climbs, it doesn’t bob, but is super plush with loads of mid stroke support, and pretty much endless travel unless it’s gone horribly wrong!

17.8kgs as pictured but an empty water bottle. 29/27.5.

Assumed ++ pressure is main pressure +20psi ?

The Nero’s are definately an art to setup !

Gold = Silver pressure plus 20 psi
Silver = Body weight in Kgs to Psi.

Bronze = Set to static sag 20mm into travel.

    Rebound fully open

Couple of clicks of LSC, HSC adjust to suite terrain.
