Started off doing it when racing cross; far easier to put embrocation on shaved legs in a freezing carpark, then far far far easier to get it off along with all the mud at the end. Carried on while road racing, same reasons really, especially when driving a long way home and no access to showers.

I wear lycra a lot to ride in and suncream goes on quicker too.

Plus, I prefer the look, being blessed with mad hairy legs..

Seriously considering it. Strangely enough, I think it works better for mountain biking than road biking as I hate getting big matted lumps of mud stuck to my legs. Even worse is pulling them off and pulling the hair out along with it. OUCH!!!
