This story going around the internet right now about a guy who tried flirting with a 19 year-old Starbucks customer, makes me wonder how people can possibly engage in harmless flirting anymore, when they run the risk of ridicule or accusations of harassment, and being made a fool of on social media.

I think, in this case, that the mother’s response was inappropriate and unwarranted.

Sending photographs of the groin area is quite popular, so I read…

yeah, it’s not the most subtle ever, but it’s pretty harmless, no?

I reckon in the next 50 years men will be castrated at birth to avoid any filthy urges

I’m disgusted. No-one ever does that to my starbucks.

One person had a good way to get revenge: “I’d spill it, burn myself, then sue them for not displaying the health and safety warnings.”

Yeah really good way… and revenge???? wtf???

So one girl liked it – (the tweet) “A barista gave me this cup that says “Careful, you’re extremely hot” with a very cute smile. Good morning u cutie”

    Another one didn’t.

I think the problem is the supposed NEWS websites grabbing any old shit from TwitFaceRedGram et al and calling it news. There should a specialist site for pathetic non-news like this.

So it OK in starbucks but not on Linkedin?

I dont think I would expect to be firted with / hit on as the customer of any business, so I dont think it acceptable.

Likewise I wouldn’t flirt with customers of my business, totally inappropriate.

    Do you not get that?

I was leaving a pub one night and the barmaid ran over as I was walking out the door and asked me out. 3 years of filth ensued. Sounds all good to me.

Ah, I see, so there is a pecking order.

Its OK in the pub if you are a woman hitting on a man, maybe in the coffeeshop hitting on a teenager, but definatley not in the legal chambers hitting on a laywer?

    Is that right?

    Got it!

Oh come on! Maybe not you, I don’t know what you’re like, but lighten up:

Barmen, waitresses, ski reps, tennis instructors, plumbers/gamekeepers/other misc. horny-handed sons of toil…

We need to lighten up or there’ll be no human race left! It’s really nowhere near creepy or harassment.

    +1 for this being clickbait/non-story

Social media allows stupid people to show the world they’re stupid. I suspect this mother has always been uptight but now she can show the world she is… there’ve always been people like this

No, I think the LinkedIn guy suffered the consequences of commenting on the photo of a flipping psycho. The poor guy did nothing wrong. A bit gauche maybe, but not wrong.

As for not flirting with a customer of your business, how is is that people are supposed to meet other people? I fully accept the need to stay away from lines of power (e.g. medical professional and patient; teacher and student; lawyer and client; clergy and, well, pretty much anyone), but where there is no power and/or danger invested in the interaction, then I say fair game.

I’m *really* bad at noticing if someone is flirting with me. Had friends point it out afterwards so many times. I really do wish people would just tell me when they fancy me – much safer.

them lads in them coffee shops do that shit to a hundred cups a day. its a bit of harmless fun in a long monotonous job and if the recipient gets a morale boost out of it aswell then its win win… and if the recipient is offended by it then well win again! prick

Is it OK to be smiled at? wished a good day? Or are your business transactions limited to the robotic?

I don’t think I would notice if someone was flirting with me, not that it is ever likely to be a problem.

I think the starbucks thing is utterly harmless.

Someone made the point recently that it only seems to be considered harassment if it’s done by unattractive people.

If George Clooney makes a mildly suggestive/flirty remark are most women going to be outraged and claim it’s inappropriate and creepy?

I never realised someone was flirting with me until they used the phrase ‘I would totally have sex with you’. It really needs spelling out for me. 🙂

I suspect most people are able to distinguish between civility and flirting.

I despair at some people, social media is awash with peoples expressions of moral outrage at a wide array off, quit frankly, bullshit reasons. Rather than be happy that a member of the public has validated that she has passed on good genes to her daughter; that she doesn’t look like a bulldog licking piss off a thistle.

That message wasn’t creepy, creepy is saying you want to kiss her where she poos. Ffs. 🙄

The thing with the lawyers isn’t comparable. The woman was trying to make a professional contract with a senior (and considerably older) partner in a law firm and his response wasn’t ‘flirty,’ it was a massive outpouring of how stunning her photo was with any mention at all of her career left as an afterthought in the last sentence.

If we can’t differentiate between a complimentary couple of scribbles on a coffee cup and a condescending abuse of authority, we’re going to die out as a species inside of a couple of generations.

Mostly seem to end up here getting people frothing over their skinny caramel machiattos which don’t have flirty messages on?
