Shimano have announced a pair of new shoes aimed specifically at road, and more importantly, cyclocross riders. The new range will be released under the new S-PHYRE name and includes the RC9 (for road) and XC9 (for cyclocross and mountain biking).
The S-PHYRE range is new for Shimano as both shoes come with all new features to provide the most efficient transfer of power from the rider in to the pedal. These features include BOA dials, externalised heel cup, reduced weight and even specific (included) temperature regulating socks.
Before we go barmy over photos of the XC9, let’s go back and take a look at some of the features on tap.
The XC9 comes with dual BOA dials. These dials come in place of velcro or laces and can quickly tighten and loosen the shoes while allowing fine adjustments for the a balance of comfort and efficiency. Each BOA dial pulls on metal, lifetime guaranteed, metal laces.
If those high-tech dials weren’t swanky enough for you then how about a Michelin rubber grip, stiff carbon sole, the option to run spikes, and did we mention those included socks?!
Another neat feature of the S-PHYRE XC9 is its use of Dow Silvadur. An antimicrobial material that promises to keep fresh with minimal washing. What better place to test their “Stay Fresh. Wash Less” motto than on a pair of CX shoes?
Also included with each pair of Shimano S-Phyre are additional foot arch supports, a carry bag, 18mm spikes (plus spike tool), and those colour-matching “professional grade” socks. The socks themselves are rather fancy too with temperature-regulating sole ventilation, cushioned pressure areas, and anti-slip heel (to stop drooping).
The Shimano S-PHYRE XC9 will be available blue and yellow from sizes 36-68 including half sizes and wide fitting options. Those of you interested in weight will probably like to know the XC9 are weigh in at 325g for a size 42 (340g for our size 43 sample).
