I picked up a Carrera Kraken frame a few years ago from a Cycle Promotions sale. It came with its own internal headset but I’ve never been happy with it and I’ve never been able to get a decent ‘feel’. Either its far too lose, or it binds – no middle ground.
(Its an internal headset, not an integrated headset. The end of the headtube is flared at each end and cups are pressed inside the frame so that the bearings sit within the cups, within the frame).
I’ve decided to replace the headset with something not made of cheese but I haven’t yet found a suitable replacement.
I bought a a Cane Creek ZS-1 from Chain reaction and tried to fit it tonight, but I’ve found that the lower headset cup is to deep for the flared end of the headtube. The cup is about 12mm deep and the I’m guessing that flared section of frame is about 10mm. The upper cup is about 6mm deep and fits fine.
The Cane Creek website is not especially helpful and I want to find out if they sell a headset with a shorter lower headset cup that doesn’t go so far inside the frame.
Does anybody know of any internal headsets with a shorter lower cup?
(The cups that I banged out of the frame are both a very similar size. Where as the lower cup on the cane creek ZS-1 is roughly twice as deep as the upper cup. The flared sections top and bottom of the headtube are of equal depth.)
Thanks in advance for any advice.
