After a couple of months away from my Jeffsy as I get ready for a trip away soon I've got a hankering to change the shock.
The bike is only 6 months old and has been sidelined by my hardtail for the last couple of months and getting back on it has reminded me that the stock shock isn't all that.
I've never been one for getting into suspension set up, preferring just to fiddle with the air pressure and ride but the base model RS Deluxe R seems simple and unresponsive. I've got no compression adjustment and even a 2/3 position lever would be nice to have.
So... has anyone here gone for something a bit more s****y on their Jeffsy?
Having a look around at Metric shocks the DVO Topaz looks good and seems to have some decent reviews. Unfortunately none of the usual suspension service shops seem to stock them which means a one stop shop for shock and mounts might be an issue (I'm heading away in a week).
Ta.
If you are fitting metric shocks I guess it’s a 27.5 model? I had a 29 and ran a cane creek in-line coil on mine and it was absolutely mind blowingly good! In fact probably the best set up I have run on the back of a bike. It such a progressive suspension set up it really suited the coil! Just wish I could get my Hightower somewhere near as awesome
Ah yes, it's the 27.5" version.
My brother is finding the Deluxe R to be grippier and more controlled than the CC Inline air....
From the Jeffsy thread on Pinkbike

I'm going through the same thought process with my 27.5 Jeffsy. I find the Deluxe ok but the Bos Vip'r on my old Bandit was noticeably better in really rough stuff.
I've had a hankering for a coil shock for a while but the leverage curve on the Bandit didn't suit. As above, the progressive leverage curve of the Jeffsy suits a coil so well it seems daft to consider upgrading to another air shock.
Main downsides are that CC hasn't released metric sizes of the Coil [IL] yet (I assume they will), I can't afford an ElevenSix from PUSH and I'm a bit nervous that a coil might deaden the 'pop' of the Jeffsy out of corners and off little kickers, which is one of the things I like best about it.
OP - my Deluxe has the 3 position compression lever and I leave it in open all the time, so I don't think you're missing much. Hardly any difference in pedal bob between open and trail but much better in the rocky stuff when left open
Just upgraded my 29er to a CC DB Coil IL. It's bonkers good. Had base setup recommended by TFTuned and it's incredible. The Jeffsy, in my opinion, suits a coil so well it's a shame YT don't offer one on any of the stock builds. I would definitely recommend coil if you're changing (perhaps see if you can borrow one to get a feel if you're that concerned).
The traction out of corners is incredible even on rough rooty terrain and that alone made me grin like an eejit the first time I rode it, after every little zig or zag in the trail. As for pop off little kickers, I'm not a huge jumper ( 😀 ) but one of my favouritle singles has a little root covered stepdown at the end and it felt so much more composed after repeated fast hits on the approach that I was in a much better position to get the line right and concentrate on the drop rather than having a bit of a "hanging on and hoping" feeling as I approached it.
This is coming off a Fox Float DPS on a 2017 29er Jeffsy. The fork was and still is a 34 Perf Elite with an MRP ramp control. The fork with the cartridge always felt a much better setup than the shock on the bike.
Thanks all for the ideas so far. Looks like the metric sizing will be a limiting factor plus availability generally (MRP Hazzard looks pretty rare from a quick search for example)
Some good stuff to investigate now.
Pretty sure TF can mod the cane creek shocks to suit metric.
In touch with TF & J Tech now ;o)
I contacted them too- presume you found the same thing in that the Coil [IL] is available in metric sizes but only the smaller sizes.
Only option for 230x60 is the DB Coil (with the piggy back reservoir) or the Öhlins TTX which is a bit more than I wanted to spend
RicB, yes exactly that. I’ve got some more reviews to search and read and then time for a call. Ohlins looks great but will be a fair chunk more than I’d anticipated!
Almost twice as much! I’m expecting a big performance jump from Deluxe to Coil but I suspect the jump from Coil [IL] to Coil Öhlins will be much smaller, especially considering I don’t threaten EWS podiums that often!
In for a penny as they say.
Spoke to James at JTech a little while ago and should have an Öhlins in my hands the day before heading to Verbier!
orangespyderman what was TF Tuned's recommended setup for the Jeffsy? I've just got my hands on a DB Inline coil. The best mod I've done to the Jeffsy so far was put on Fox Factory 36 running at160mm...truly transformed the bike compared to the Factory 34's it came with.
