xt disc brakes. Worth it?

Did an impulse buy today of XT disc brakes, just now having 2nd thoughts. Bit late I know, but how do they compare to Juicy 5’s they’ll be replacing?

New style? Much more reliable, and very good brakes. How much?

Whoops, sorry, yeap new style with the twiddley knobs and stuff. Cost wise it’s being lumped together on the bike to work scheme by LBS so no price yet.

They’re great – fit and forget, a doddle to bleed, lovely levers. Can’t go wrong. Just jealous you’ve got the new ones…!

Oh, and pad changing compared to the others you mentioned is way quicker.

I upgraded my Avid Ultimate carbon jobbies to the new XT’s…

i literally today ditched my juicy fives for a new set of XTs, not riden them yet though

Hmmm. I’m being driven nuts by my Juicys with endless pad and bleeding “issues”, but have always refused to contemplate Shimanos – perhaps I should re-think. Are they REALLY that much better?

both my bikes have em, and the wife’s, and my youngsters…..I couldn’t be doing with mucking about with brakes every week…Shimano’s are fit and forget.

Why’s that then? Of all the brake manufacturers I’ve tried, Shimano have given me the least hassle. OK, there are more powerful brakes, and lighter brakes, but really, Shimano are by far and away the easiest to live with.

They’re excellent – really can’t fault them. Don’t doubt!

for me, they were the best brakes i could afford given the current bicycle component price climate :S a set of marta SL is nearing £500 or something ridiculous….

i like the XT lever, adjustable feel and on the fly reach adjust, look cool too.

Just hope they are ‘fit and forget’ because you can’t get spares, so e.g. if the caliper starts leaking (common problem from experience/hearsay) then you’re stuffed.

Yes you cant buy spares for shimano brakes every one knows that

apart that is from a place that sells shimano spare parts for shimano brakes

I fell off my bike and smashed my left hand XT master cylinder took me all of 5 minutes to track a spare one down and pay for it

Just for the record, i have never had any problems with my ’08 XT brakes.

Sorry was out on the bike! Nickc – it’s because I rode a mate’s and was driven absolutely round the bend by the %***!%% thing changing gear when I was trying to brake. I swore never to touch them again. Rant over – basically I don’t get on with the combined gear change thing and don’t think I ever will.

I’ve got the old style saints (which are the same as last years xts I think) on my hack about bike and I quite like them. They dont seem to have the same “feel” as avids in the car park but I think in the on the trails they have a similar degree of modulation. As others have said not the most powerful breaks on the market and a doddle to work on.

I’d fit them to anything except my downhill bike.
