    Anyone know anything about them?

Whilst digging out the footings for a new workshop, I came across a Bees nest under some old wood. It was about the size of an orange and only had 20-30 bees, so I carefully moved it with a shovel to somewhere out of the way of the building site. The bees were a bit frantic for a while but them seemed to re-locate the nest (I only move it 3 metres, to under a bush).

The next day I notice the bees have ripped off the cover (dried grass neatly twisted like a bird’s nest) and seem to be emptying the cells. I guess they’re moving the honey off to a new nest?

bumble bees are annual, so the nest will die soon. Question is have the queens flown will there be any.

I wish I’d taken a before pic, as the wrong thing looked like a ball of string, so they’ve spend the last day unwrapping the whole nest, which surprised me.

I do feel rather bad about disturbing them, but I have 9 tons of hardcore arriving tomorrow am and they were in the way…

Disturbed some a couple of years ago… To make ammends I’ve got some buckets with holes in the bottom filled with old plantpot peat placed in a very sheltered spot seem to be used by burrowing bees
Or you could put a box up for them….

Many Bumble Bee species are either rapidly diminishing or downright ****. Try to be nice to them.

They’re great to watch. The way they just bimble about without a care in the world. 😀
