Wi-Fi range extender

Any recommendations for a wi-fi range extender please. The wireless connection in my sons bedroom is dire, did a speed test last night – our bedroom 24mb upload, in his room it was under 1mb.

I had a free sky one but it was pish, just seemed to slow the network down in the whole house.

I used to recommend this one as it’s simple, small and seems to do a great job. However, after 2 years it’s performance seems to be dropping off, so maybe worth spending a bit more

My daughter finds the BT one that’s £20 at Argos does the job fine at her uni digs.

I have net gear one, seems ok. They can sometimes just lose the network and need turning off and on again.

It needs to be placed somewhere between your router and the receiving computer, so check with a laptop or tablet or phone where the signal drops off and check for available sockets.

Or.

If your router and your son’s bedroom are on the same ring circuit and he wants/needs low ping etc. you could try one of these. I’ve got them rigged up to my desktop and the speed is really good, plus you can still use the socket. Need a free ethernet port on the router and on the receiving device though. That model is only good for one receiving device, i think you can get ones with more ethernet sockets though.

He has a power plug in his room for xbox/tv, its his laptop/phone that the main issue is with.

Stoner does that just need plugged into the router for set up then can be moved to anywhere in the house?

If you already have a power plug.. just replace it for one which also incorporates a wifi access extender..

I use this one with excellent results..

I have 2x spare homeplug BT wifi extenders for sale in the classifieds.

The BT repeater can be set up over wifi connection, no need to plug it in to a router.

tp-link powerplugs something or other I think. I’ll take a look at the combined unit then.

The problem with standard wifi extenders is that they extend the range but half the bandwidth, as they need to receive and re-broadcast. You can get wifi repeaters that work over PowerLine for the connection to the main router for better performance: just plug the router into the mains with a powerline adaptor, and then put a powerline to wifi repeater in the far end of the house.

Or stop using shoddy wifi access points, turn the wifi off on the supplied modem and get some proper wifi APs. I threw away our netgear router and wifi repeaters and now have the older model of https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lite/ which despite being a bit more complex to install is perfectly reliable and has awesome range.

Yeh that was my experience with the sky wifi extender. I’ll take a look at the powerline extender as the a powerline is currently plugged into the router anyway.

How do you make the phone or laptop roam to the new point? Instead the bloody thing sits there timing out and buffering using the router downstairs instead of the powerline wifi thing

I have tried setting it to the same channel, same SSID, different channel, different SSID and all combinations thereof.

Okay so I’ve checked on amazon and I’m using these if I buy this will it work with the existing powerplug that I use elsewhere?

It will. One suggestion.. put the faster 300 powerplug into the router.

Sorry for the hijack – we’ve got a separate consumer unit in our garage for the plugs/freezer etc. in there that (I think) comes off the main consumer unit in the house.

Would these plug-in extender gizmos work if I was to put one in the garage?

Sometimes it will.. somethimes it wont.. my advice is to borrow a couple already paired and see if the link light comes on at your location.

Nearly any old router and DD-WRT[/url] could sort you out 🙂
