Whyte T129s anybody got one, what's it like

mattjgFree Member
They were decent enough to lend me a giant trance x2 29er to keep me riding in the mean time.
That’s a bit more like it.
boloclipsFree MemberIve just had mine back from my LBS the rock shox back axel was coming loose every time I rode it? Whyte sent out a new fox system for it and my LBS said that whyte are preparing for a lot more complaints / repairs!!
On the stem size I have put a 50mm orange stalk (from my old bike) on and it is perfect!
Apart from the problems the bike totally rocks could never go back now!
rollsroyceFree MemberYeh mattjg, that’s what I thought. went out on it last night, made me appreciate how good mine is! The giant’s ok at climbing but no where near as much fun.
Boloclips that’s a new one on me, mine appears to be ok but thanks for the heads up I’ll keep checking it. What size frame are you riding?
Found another thread on here with a guy with a t129 who’s experiencing brake vibration too. Seems it may not just be me…..
jonnyb1972Free MemberMine keeps coming loose at the back end as well its driving me nuts.
jonnyb1972Free Memberboloclips “What Fox system are they replacing them with” I’ve just contacted my bike shop and their looking into it for me” ?
boloclipsFree MemberJonny
TBH I am not sure what they replaced it with exactly it had a rock shox bolt through when it went in and came out with a FOX bolt through.. I did not look at it i just got on it and rode it.. loads better, back end no longer comes loose.
It was with the LBS for about a week trying to solve the problem.jonnyb1972Free MemberThanks, Whyte are posting out a new Shimano one for mine apparenty, Im getting new wheels so hopefully get both done before weekend. Mine came undone several times last week on two laps of Llandegla, it had been fine for a few hundred miles as well !!!
jonnyb1972Free MemberStans flow on hope pro 2 evo, my bike shop matched the Halfords price and are going to swap them over etc for me, although im having to wait longer but that’s ok 🙂
rollsroyceFree MemberLet us know how much of an improvement they are over the stock wheels. I was looking at these for future poss purchase.
jonnyb1972Free MemberWill do, I’m changing as I ride quite rocky areas and have broken two spokes already and the wheels seem a bit flexy but I am 6.2 and 95 kg, so could do with stronger wheels, I just “hope” I can live with the noisy hub 🙂
SwayndoFree MemberMine is set up with HD/NN on stock wheels. which is a brilliant combo for the bike IMO. The shop got me a 60mm Whyte stem and swapped it for the stock 80mm so I still have green bits and I use a 760mm Nukeproof bar which is spot on for me. Changed the saddle to an SDG. Contacts and rubber is all I’ve changed tho.
I’m really impressed with the Elixir 5 brakes. I started out with my Hope Hoops and Shimano rotors and got that vibration, but none with the HS1s. It was the pads going past the contact surface onto the “arms” of the rotor that caused the vibration … might be worth moving a spacer to try.
Couldn’t be happier with mine really and it’s been lots of places from out in the local wood and on long Landy track adventures to Torridonian rides and even the High Atlas 😀
mattjgFree MemberI’m really impressed with the Elixir 5 brakes
Should you want a backup pair, I’ve taken mine off, looking for a home for them. They’re ridden no further than round the car park when I picked up the bike and around my garden a few times. They work perfectly, I removed them because I already had spare Hopes, and it makes life easier for all the brakes on my bikes to be the same pads etc.
SwayndoFree MemberPerfect mattjg, I’m after a set for the HT, so can you email me your demands please? In profile.
twoninerFree MemberI’m interested to hear about the back end bolt through coming loose. I’ve not had it happen to my S and its had some pretty hard rides. Something I will keep an eye on.
My S seems to be on the heavy side, cant figure out where the weight is, the wheels are light enough for stock. Anyone know if the chainset is a weighty one? I’ve not had mine off.
jonnyb1972Free MemberBasically the maxle just comes loose and you can turn it even though the qr is engaged. Whyte are sending a Shimano one out to the bike shop as a replacement, mine has been fine for weeks and has only just started doing it, I do ride quite heavy though to be honest.
mattjgFree Memberweight’s in the frame I think (my chainset is XT). but it’s OK for the money and capability IMO, my buddies have bling carbon Tallboys coming in at the 5 grand mark.
rollsroyceFree MemberSo thought I’d put in a quick update.
Got the bike back last Saturday. Sram have changed the lowers on the fork as they agreed there was a knock. They put in some Sid lowers. Said same as reba. Not sure though. They look pretty similar. Gloss black though not Matt. Nice and plush again with no knocking anymore.
The shop had done research on the brake problem and contacted avid. They swapped the rotors to a different style and put new pads in. They told me to bed them in as per avid instructions which I did. 20 times from about 12mph down to walking and then 10 times at about 20mph.
Went out and halfway through ride started again. So it’s def not rotors or pads! That’s one thing I guess! I’ll see how it is this weekend. Then back to the shop if it doesn’t sort itself! Again. Wish I could just pay the difference to get some formulas or hopes. Problem would be solved then I’m sure!twoninerFree MemberMy 129-s hasnt had look in since I got my on-one fatty. I should take it out this weekend.
singlecrackFree MemberAvid brakes are known for the noise …..prob something to do with there fixing setup ..lots of conical washers under the calliper …..tends to let the calliper move around (vibrate) under braking …….most other calipers fit close to the mounts
rollsroyceFree MemberI could live with the noise. It’s the vibration that’s the problem. Whole fork vibrates and rear end. You can see the fork vibrating forwards and backwards under braking! Best way to describe it is as if the disc is made up of grippy sections and spaces. So you get an abs like effect.
rollsroyceFree MemberSo the pestering has paid off, my lbs has been in contact with ATB (whyte distributor) and they’ve agreed to swap my elixir 5’s for some shimano slx’s with a matchmaker adapter. yay! just waiting for them to arrive at the shop then they’ll fit them. well chuffed.
I went out last week, and landed a “small” jump on a nasty rock, blew my tyre off and flat spotted my rear rim big time. I’ve ordered some stans flows to get swapped on. Just wondering if anyone’s running flows yet and whats the biggest tyre they can fit on the back?
singlecrackFree MemberI’m running flows …..tbh I think 2.25/2.3 is max on the rear
twoninerFree MemberI’m in the process of getting some flows with pro 2’s for my 129s. I initally though the rims were quite stiff but noticed after a bit of riding that they do have a lot of flex after settling in. The rear wheel has a slight buckle in it.
I’ve noticed on mine that the paint chips really easy and the cable retainers that run along the underside of the down tube need some locktite.
SwayndoFree MemberHave you tried tightening the spokes on the wheels? I’m a 200lb rider and they are fine for me but I did need to tighten them up. I also had to tighten the Flow Hoops on my HT.
Tried my Hoops on the bike, but the rear never seemed to fit properly in the T129s.

I am going to drop it in to a local bike shop close to where I am at the moment to sort the back wheel out, I will also get them to check and tighten the spokes on the front if needed too. I need it good to go for Saturday for a ride I have planned.
What back wheel was that? Was that a hope hoop? What rim was it was was wrong with the fit?
rollsroyceFree MemberHaha, the “Friday” bike saga continues! My reverb gave up on me last night and won’t hold air anymore! Won’t go up anymore. Off it goes for another rockshox component warranty claim. Forks, brakes and now reverb!?!
hertfordroadFree MemberI bought a T129s to replace by Board FS Team earlier this year and thought I would drop a few notes on my overall experience. Overall I’d recommend the bike as its a fab ride, but Whyte’s service isn’t great and some of the components may needs upgrading earlier than Ii expected.
THE POSITIVES
– great looking bike – added Superstar gold pedals and everyone comments on the bikes looks
– rides really well, the reviews do it justice on this front (although I think the tyres will need changing for winter conditions as they will clog with mud when it gets wet)
– very balanced and helps me do things beyond my capabilities
– reverb seat is a bonusTHINGS I AM THOUGHTFUL ABOUT
– SRAM GXP bottom bracket has worn out very quickly – the bracket on my old Boardman lasted a year, this bracket lasted around 5 months of light summer use (with most of my riding in the dry) and I have used the road bike much more than this bike. The bracket shouldn’t in my opinion wear so quickly. When I contacted Rutland cycling where I bought it they felt SRAM (Fishers) would say it is a wearable item.
– Whyte (ATB’s) service is not good – spoke to them about it and they just told me to contact SRAM (this is how it works apparently)
– Headset bearing has also worn out
– Elixir 5 brakes can be very good but can also have days (particularly in the wet when they don’t perform brilliantly)
– the dropper post cable can get caught on the saddle locking collar as it drops (need to be monitored)
– the black paintwork chips very easily
As I said, I’d recommend but bit of a shock for me to be having to spend money so early into its life to replace components.
seriouseyebrowsFree MemberRear Maxle continuously came loose on mine , whyte replaced it all with a shimano system, much better .
Rear tire is too fragile for rocky welsh rides, Chen shin tubes don’t help either! Spesh ground control on now , so far so good. Brilliant bike for the money , came off a transition covert, feels just as capable on the decents, and climbs great. Wider rims on the shopping list, some wtb frequency i23 could be the go. It’s a silent killer 🙂nukeFull MemberBit of thread resurrection as very tempted to get a 2014 t129 for my local Surrey hills riding but the only thing really putting me off is tyre clearance.
Anyone know if it improved for 2014 bikes? My favourite rear tyre is the onone smorgasbord (running currently on my Scandal 29er): will this fit?
thisisnotaspoonFree MemberAs I said, I’d recommend but bit of a shock for me to be having to spend money so early into its life to replace components.
I got burnt by this feeling with my Pitch, from then on I decided even if it doesnt look so much of a brgain it’s better to build things up from parts. At lest that way you’re free to spec it how you like, and it’s not that expensive as you’ll have a few spare bits already like saddles etc that are personal preferance anyway so would be extras on the complete bike price regardless.
failedengineerFull MemberFWIW, my T129 Works is 13 months old now and nothing has worn out or is showing signs of wearing out. Very good, in my opinion. I sold the Reverb straight away, so can’t comment on that. Bike is fab, except maybe the forks, which don’t have very good small bump performance.
tricky-dickyFree MemberI picked up a 2014 t129s this week from winstanleys.
Swapped a couple of things. Std rear tyre and f&r wheels replaced with a Easton haven and spec purg. At 2:3 size clearance is about 4-5mm on drive side is quite tight.
Not ridden in anger yet as fitting an invisiframe kit over weekend, first impression is a lot of bike for the money ( especially with the year end discount winstanleys offered)
RichardononeorangeFull MemberSecond thread resurrection time. I am thinking about one of these, very interesting thread. Doesn’t anyone know if the 2015 models are different, and if so anyone got one?
Cheers
bigblokeFree MemberI have a 2015 T129S. The frame is slightly different now, shorter top tube by a smidgen.
ononeorangeFull MemberI suspect you are riding a large given your name – very briefly, big enough? Happy with it? Cheers!
bigblokeFree MemberI am 6′ with 32″ inside leg it’s not as stretched out as some large frames, fit is excellent. Very happy with it. Wheels are tubeless and set up easily with a track pump literally 10 mins each wheel. Quality is good like whyte should be. The seatpost clamp is a nice touch.Colour is lovely in the flesh more apple green than full on neon.
ononeorangeFull MemberCheers big bloke. 6’2″ and 34″ inside leg here so I think I need to ride one first. Have emailed cycle works to se if they have a demo. Thanks for the info.
