Just about to get daughter some pet rats. Cracking little animals with bags of character. Spoke to a couple of breeders and they said that they sell lots as pets, but even more as snake food. I know this is what happens in nature, still not keen on it.

Got me thinking, why on earth keep a snake as a pet. They don’t show affection or bond with owners, they just exist, I have 3 cats and they are involved in most things we do around the house and garden, I’m sure that rats will be given time. The rewards if having a dog as a companion are obvious, I just can’t see the appeal of a snake…

IIRC it is because they like snakes

If you get a big enough snake you can keep it in your garden so it can eat the local cats and solve your cat shit problem.

Good point, druidh! Unless they’re outside and eating the cats and pigeons, of course. Especially if they’re eating the racing pigeons. Lovely nommage for a snake is a racing pigeon.

Perhaps they want a cat but have an allergy.

Apparently it’s a “Cracking little animal with bags of character”, therefore the OP’s argument fails.

It’s fun to take them on a plane.

I think some people just ‘get off’ on being able to ‘own’ something beautiful from nature, the more bizarre the better, the less at home the animal will be the better.

Lovely colourful rainforest birds caged, WTF is that all about?

Rats do make lovely pets, maybe even the best rodents, pretty intelligent too.

Can you keep venomous snakes as pets? Say something like a tapian. Be a bloody good burglar deterant for when you’re on holiday.

my father in law is big on snakes, especially indigenous ones, he tries to protect them from prejudice, — he also gets bitten now and again— he says adder bites can be a bit trippy……..

But he would not keep one as a ‘pet’–

Just like keeping a cat. At least the snake won’t eat you if you die on the toilet.

When I was little, we went round to my neighbour’s place one day. He had loads of little white mice in a cage. He asked me to pick one out, so I spotted one I liked… already giving him a name in my head and planning his mouse house.

No. I was picking the mouse that would be fed to his snake 😆 This is why I am an emotionless husk.

I love snakes, and I’d really like a green tree python, they look beautiful draped around a tree branch, like a living sculpture, but I don’t have space, really.
One or two of these cute little critters, on the other hand:

Think about these two sentences together for a minute, and you might well work it out.

Would say its an individual thing
But I fail to see how a Snake could be an actual pet.

I can’t see why anyone would have a problem with having snakes as a pet and also sees no problem with owning a RAT?!?!?! I just think rats are really gross and horrible looking, bizarre arguement to me 🙄 .

Mate of mine at uni got a snake & I think eventually ended up with 3, a royal python called Emily, a boa called Charlotte & another one that I’ve never seen, which he got once he’d graduated.

I was a bit unimpressed when he said he was getting one, but he did his research, bought the biggest vivarium he could and fitted it out well.

Still don’t really agree with keeping pets in cages, whether they are snakes, rats, guinea pigs, birds etc. but I don’t see why you have singled out snakes…

A guy I used to work with at my last place kept scorpions.

I’ve always wanted a pet great white shark, but I suspect after I fed it enough of the local populace I’d end up in jail.

I managed to hoover a dead rat up once. It was defrosting by the radiator prior to being fed to the corn snake my wife had.

Made a great noise going up the pipe.

The snake’s dinner was a bit dustier than usual, though.

Not one person has illustrated the rewards of owning a snake. Other than ‘because you can’, why own one?

They’re way cool. That’s what I think is the reason.

Having had a number of cats as a child and now owning two cats for a number of years I’d question the rewards of owning a cat.

The only reason they hang around is for their own selfish needs, they wouldn’t care in the slightest if our entire family dropped dead as long as they continued to recieve food, warmth and strokes. Their loyality will change in a second. They bite us, crap and wee on the floor seemingly at random (although I’ll conceed, they prefer outside), they steal food, they slink in a way that is most unnerving, they’re mean to the dog, they torture other animals, sometimes to death, sometimes not, they really don’t care.

If they were people they’d be sociopaths and we’d lock them away for life.

Not sure why you’d own a snake, but by the same token why would you own rats?

My sister’s bloke used to keep them & they absolutely stank of pee. They used to clean the cage out all the time, but I think the rats used to wee in it as soon as it had been cleaned.

Made the room they were kept in very smelly & the whole of the upstairs in their house had a faint rat wee smell. Wasn’t very pleasant.

I always found handling a snake a far better experience than hamsters etc – much more akin to having a cat sat on your lap than the somewhat energetic way that small mammals behave.

They do interesting things like shed their skin and dislocate their jaws whilst eating too.
