Noticed this for a while now, why do contestants in quiz shows clap themselves when the get a question correct. I can see why the audience might do it by why the self congratulations. Also noticed it happens with competitors on something like strictly come dancing when they receive a compliment.

It would be odd at work if you gave yourself a round of applause every time you received a well done !

Because the producer told them to?

It's something that really annoys me - it's just really bad manners.

I think it's just some sort of Povlovian response. You're normally sitting in the audience and clap when everyone else does. So you do the same when you're on stage.

It seems odd, I agree. But the flip side is that you sit/stand there motionless while everyone around you claps, that would feel even more strange to me.

Maybe they should take a bow.

There is someone stood at the front who’s job it’s is to tell audience/ participants when to clap, laugh, boo, act stupid.

Every TV programme is stage managed

I think they're clapping the people who are clapping, who set the question, who created the situation. Or just clapping in a sort of animal reflex kind of way. Why does anyone do anything?

You clearly haven't seen the team meetings where I work.

Thank god it’s not just me that thinks it’s weird!

It is weird as the correct response is to give the finger (both hands) to your adversary whilst screaming ‘**** YOU, **** YOU’.

Thats what I did when I was on count down.

It's the end of show waving that gets me. No-one, literally, ever waves for half a minute continuously, you wave and then stop. It's daft, and if you try it you can almost cramp up in the triceps if you wave too hard.

Well it's got worse here today. They're giving each other awards and clapping wildly. Oh and they've put on a disco. This is in an office FFS.

Wave your dick around slowoldman, that'll soon put a stop to it.

And why do gameshow hosts run onto the stage? If they left the dressing room 10 seconds earlier they could just stroll on.

That's generally why I do a few little claps when people are applauding me #humblebrag

Nevermind clapping yourself, clapping for anyone is on it's way out.

Jazz hands only at Manchester University.

It's people who clap with just their palms that creep me out.
