What a bloody mine field !!!

Looking at buying a new set of lights so I can do more night riding out on the trails(on my own and instead of begging and borrowing) and convinced myself a need a helmet, bar and rear LED.

Think a combination of the following:
Exposure Maxx D Mk3
Exposure Diablo Mk4
Exposure Red Eye Micro

Good combination, Joystick instead of Diablo, front light good enough, rear LED does the job. Also can anyone let me know how long I can expect the battery to last if I'm turning the brightness up and down for climbs etc ?

Any help would be appreciated.

You could have a Gloworm X1 and X2 combination plus a QR handlebar mount for less than the price of the Maxx-D (plus you get a 10% STW Premier discount - http://singletrackworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/tuesday-treats-26-crg-moto/ making it even better value)

Both lights are compatible with either battery pack so you can swap them over and beam patterns can be customised by changing optics.

They would give a similar output as Exposure do seem to overstate their outputs somewhat (the Maxx-D Mk4 had a claimed 1285 lumens but MTBR tested it at 800 lumens in an integrating sphere).

Search Gloworm on here and you'll find loads of feedback.

Gloworm or something of its ilk makes more sense than Exposure IMO- far more bang for your buck.

I've got a Gloworm X1, far brighter than a Diablo, or a Mark-3 MAxxd on it's own.

I'd go for an X2 and an X1 for sure.

I run a gloworm X1 on the lid and an exposure MaxD on the bars only because I dont like hanging batteries on the frame or stem.

If you're ok with separate batteries, then I agree the X1 and X2 combo is hard to beat.

Gloworm kit is VERY well made I can highly recommend them.

I am using these http://four4th.co.uk/products/lights/

On the bar I have a Holy Moses and on the lid a Genesis 3 spot. Lots of power.

Bloody Hell I read the ST article on the Gloworm lights and entered the competition... memory is not what it used to be !

Seems to be quite a lot of (good) fuss about these lights are they really that good and what's the battery life like out on the trail if you are turning them down for climbs etc ?

Also, anyone tried mounting the X1 on an Urge Endur-o-matic helmet. It does look like you can stretch the velcro strap across the two holes at the front but interested to see if anyone has given it a go ?

I can +1 for hte four4th lights. I have an Exodus on my lid, its great!
If you go this route, definitely get the "green" beam ones. They are noticeably better (wider and more natural light it seems), without the throwing of more lumens at it approach.

Pictures of Gloworm X1 mounted in Urge Endur-o-matic here on Ed Oxley's helmet - http://www.great-rock.co.uk/2013/01/gloworm-lights/

Run times will vary according to how long you are high etc. Expect at least 2.5 hours at 1200 lumens from the X2 (4 cell) and 2.25 hours at 850 lumens for the X1 (using the 2 cell battery pack).

MBUK got 2hrs 46 mins out of the X2 on full when they tested it (and gave it 4.5 stars, Value and Most Wanted awards) http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/article/best-mountain-bike-lights-28195/

neninja, do you know if Gloworm have any plans to put the U3 in the X2?

I don't expect any changes to the X2 until the Autumn in time for Interbike in mid September.

I would expect Gloworm to be looking towards the new XM-L2 rather than the XM-L U3.
