Where do you go for 5 minutes of habitual piece amongst life’s daily issues? I know some would say the mancave, others a favorite chair or room. My grandad used to have a hi fi in the corner of the dining room. He’d sit in his favorite chair, plug in his headphones and just sit and listen to classical music for half an hour. Me, it’s that 10 minutes with my breakfast coffee devoted to reading the morning news.

    Where’s yours?

Having just gone back to a shared house it’s my bedroom. Just about to move to another place, the room is bigger so I’m going to try and drop a sofa in there so I can just escape and chill out.

First thing in the morning, when only the cat and I are up, I enjoy a peaceful coffee in the kitchen.

Live alone? Don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who at some point doesn’t just want that quiet moment away from everyone else.

My granddads set up was very similar, although for mine it was the music of the 30’s. As I remember it though it wasn’t for half an hour but rather from when he lost a lung to cancer in 1969 until he died in 1987 when the remaining lung finally gave up.

Morning dump on the throne with an espresso and the iPad. I get about 5 mins before anyone realises I’ve gone AWOL.

In the garage working on the bike or in the back garden with the telescope out (Looking at stars, honestly!)

Edit: But really, when I hit the trails on my own it’s the same feeling.

An interesting parallel – my grandad died of lung cancer about the same time.

He was lucky Kryton to have 18 years after he had the lung removed but it so limited the rest of his life. Most winters meant a stay in hospital as his remaining lung was scarred from TB. My uncle, who was his youngest son also died of lung cancer while still in his 50’s. I’ve never even thought once about smoking myself.

I’m normally last one up, so it’s quite nice just to sit in bed on the Ipad if not I can just sit in office with headphones on.

Mine tend to be on the train to/from work, it’s an hours commute and I make sure I have 15 mins either way where I stop looking at the phone/newspaper and just zone out a bit.

At home it’s the garage or maybe the chair at the end of the garden but, with my commute, I rarely use it.

Same here for in the garage fettling kit radio on.

No where in the house is a sanctuary at any time of any day! I’d throw out the t.v if I could. Catch up children’s BBC has a lot to answer for

this or in anywhere once the kids are in bed and sleeping!

Nowhere within the house/garden. 18m & 4yr old will drag chairs around to open any doors they suspect contain an adult within, even the throne door offers no sanctuary.

Sitting in the car on the drive, excellent wifi but they can still see you and will hammer the lounge window until you acquiesce to their demands.

The garage, it’s a cliche but it’s true. Sometimes it’s purposeful but other times, you just want to fanny around pointlessly with something.

In the kitchen, stood between the kettle and the window..

We have a curtain between the living room and the kitchen and the kids are well trained enough to understand that if that curtain is drawn it’s best not to disturb the Wizard of Oz

the bog, first thing, when the family are eating breakfast.
or the living room last thing at night when everyone’s in bed and I can watch the cycling highlights, a film or some crap TV about muscle-cars.

Again, as the proud owner of a three year old its on the throne having my morning dump with a coffee. If I’m really lucky she only comes up wanting dressed.

Shift work does have its upsides though, days off with neither spawn nor wife are awesome, half days or nightshifts give a bit of peace as well.

Much like others, has to be on the throne, peace until you know you have been there too long when the wife/child shouts up the stairs “Dad, are you ok?”

Anywhere and almost anytime. I share a house, that’s at the end of a 1/2km dirt track, with a girl who spends almost all her spare time riding her horse or doing exercise classes. Perfect.

I was just looking at houses to rent and found a few with self contained tree houses, but they all wanted considerably more to rent the tree houses as well.

I had visions of me stumbling home and not wanting to disturb everybody, sleeping in the tree house, or pretending to go the shops, driving around the corner and hiding in the tree house for the day.

I guess the maids quarters will have to do instead.
