I’ve managed to make a bit of a mess when I bled the brakes this afternoon, and now have brake fluid all over the caliper. I’d really like to go cycling tomorrow but have run out of IPA to clean the caliper with, so any suggestions on what to use, that can be bought from a shop on a Sunday?

    cheers

If it’s just overspill on levers and calipers, not decontamination of disc and rotors you’re after, all you need is hot soapy water. I’d suggest doing that sooner rather than later.

I did try to clean it with washing up liquid, but the caliper still seemed to be a bit oily. I’ll try again tomorrow but with hot water this time.

    Thanks

The Three Horseshoes does a good IPA and is open on a Sunday, The Red Lion too.

The barmaid at The Tower looked baffled when I asked for one but I think she was new.

More helpfully, is it a good idea to use car/motorbike brake cleaner? I was told that our brakes don’t get hot enough to burn it off properly. That was years ago mind, our brakes have definitely changed since then, and maybe the cleaner has too?

If it’s the calipers then fine, not ideally on the rotors or pads

Some may leave an oily residue

Halfords and Screwfix sell electrical contact cleaner which is IPA. Likely to have less other stuff in it than car brake cleaner

Halfords sell cycle disc brake cleaner too, bit just car/motorbike. Think it’ll be Muc-Off or some other branded type.

Although electrical contact cleaner also works very well too.

I keep a stack of alcohol swabs in my toolkit – the little packs they use to clean before an injection.

But you should be able to get Iso from your pharmacy?
