Currently got a Hope PF41 with GXP adaptors fitting a BB92 shell.

The BB is a bit clicky/creaky, despite refitting and greasing, so would like to try something else.

    My options seem to be:

    1. SRAM gxp – forums seem to say its plastic rubbish

    2. Wheel Manufacturing threaded – probably the best option

    3. Token Ninja. Seems like a good design, but EU stocks seem quite low, and can’t find the R232 GXP shims anywhere except the US

    4. Praxis – don’t like because the two parts are not connected.

Any thoughts, or other options, apart throwing the GXP cranks away?

    Hmmmm…….

I actually have a Hope PF41 and GXP converters en route to me at this very moment to replace my horrible creaky crunchy bag-o-spanners BB86 SRAM GXP.

That seemed to be the standard answer when I was figuring out what to do, so your post concerns me somewhat after I’ve just dropped £150 on the Hope BB and special tool to fit it!

Hopefully you will be fine. I have been searching for a mystery creak for 2 years, and the BB is the only part of the bike I have not swapped out!

If the noise is the Hope, then it could be coming from imperfections at BB shell / BB interfaces, or the GXP shims, but then of course it could be coming from somewhere else completely! Noise appears when only when stomping on pedals.

Interesting… I have a PF41 fitted and after just 3 months use I got a loud click on each rotation. Took ages chasing each component one by one until eventually traced to the DS bearing.

My GF has a PF46 fitted and after 9 months use she developed the exact same clicking noise. Again, I chased through all other components first before ending up replacing the NDS bearing in her setup to cure (for now).

Not quite the longevity I have had from Hope BB’s in the past but loathed to give up on them yet as I have purchased the tool as well.

The GXP concept worries me. The crank is clamped to the non-drive side bearing, so it takes all lateral forces (which is not ideal), and any vertical play/tolerance between the spindle and the drive side bearing, will result in an unwanted out of plane rotation at the non-drive side bearing. Both this effects might lead the NDB to die early.

    Mmmm.

    Mystery creaks are bad…

Got a fantastic deal last winter for a 150/150 all mountain bike frame. Was concerned a bit due to the PF BB92.

Went with an “normal” Shimano XTR BB.

No issues so far. Run the bike hard and had lots of pedal strikes this summer.

Friend of mine chased a mystery creak for a couple of days on his bike- in this case: the pedals…

    Good luck!
