What with all these new dog threads, where are you getting your pet insurance?

..as we have a labradoodle coming in 2 weeks.
Went with Animal Friends last time, supposedly ethical insurer putting profit back to animal charities.
Never any problems with being paid out for the couple of claims submitted but we didn’t have the dog for the long term so did not fall into the 12-month treatment trap or capped treatment.

Pet plan. Never had problems when we’ve had to make a claim, which is what it’s all about. Not the cheapest but they haven’t let us down in 20 years now.
We had one of ours with Kennel club for a while but way over priced.

Tesco, but not claimed in over 10 years, so can’t comment on them coughing up. Very reasonably priced though.

I’ll get flamed for this. We’ve never had pet insurance and I’ve had dogs all my life.

Bingo was a Westie- a breed known for skin issues and weight issues. We checked his parents, then fed him a VERY strict healthy diet.

Dietwise cooked Brocolli, raw carrots, Pears, milk. Goats milk, Boiled rice, chicken.

No processed food, no tinned food. Treats or snacks. Like humans, lean/healthy diet equals longevity. Pop the premiums in the bank and look after his health. Don’t kill him with kindness.

Later in life when he might need age related health the premiums are higher to reflect age.

Put the cash in the bank! Labrdoodle must be £40ish pcm.
I do £30 for my lab, and did the same for my old collie, not run out of cash yet! (and no fat insurance companies are making loads from me 😆 )

ours was with argos untill it want up an absolute fortune, tried the little meerkat fella and got it miles cheaper

Petplan. Would rather have the insurance than have to make the choice between putting him to sleep and expensive treatment I can’t afford.

I’m not risking the no insurance route.
Initial quote from meerkat was £6/month but I can’t recall who it was yet and not a final price as I could not get the “chipped” discount with the chip number.

PetPlan here on the advice of a friend who had a dog who was always getting into mischief and requiring numerous operations and he said they were excellent every time.

We went for the ultimate cover – came in at £38 a month – hope we never have to use it though!

Was only recently I realised that it’s more than I pay for the insurance on my car……….think it may be time to sell the car and strap a chariot to him and start getting some value for money! 🙂

Our dog lurcher is about £25 a month with m&s who have paid up fine. We have saved by having insurance but i think i do have the worlds most accident prone dog.

petplan, had the most usefull and least cynical limitations on claim limits of those i checked.. the M&S insurer of the dog world (prior to M&S changing their bike limits that is).

Currently with a company called ‘animal friends’ but not claimed yet! Been with a company in the past called Equine and leisure; E&L as they are sometimes known and they took about 2 months to pay up. It was only when I wrote a an arsey latter to them did they pull their finger out, so avoid them! Currently pay £13 p/m for a 9 yr old springer.

We are with More Than for both our Springer and cat. Only other I ould consider is Pet Plan but they cost more.

PS other half is a vet.

I confused.com it and went with M&S.
Good 3rd party coverage, which is essential with all the kid’s faces round my way.

We’re with argos (came out best on a comparison site for us), he’s an 18 month old springer.

The package we got was a lifetime cover thing so if he’s got a long term problem (hope it never happens), they’ll keep covering it, whereas some companies will only do that for the first 12 months or to a certain value.

Think it was just over £200 for the year. Great peace of mind knowing how much of an idiot he can be at times 😉

With Petplan who I think are overpriced but now the dogs are 14 we are having a few health problems with them I don’t think we can change.

tbh We’ve never had pet insurance, neither with my dogs or any of my parents’ animals – just pay out if needed (and until they get old usually nothing). Plus Vets will ‘bargain’ if not on insurance.

£1k premium for one of my dogs – time for a re-think.

Never had pet insurance in 30 years, had multiple pets at the same time. Looking at the prices we’d be looking at nearly £100 a month in “insurance”. We’ve never spent even close to 30K in that time on pet repairs. They’re all too eager to find ways of wriggling out of paying and stopping paying at the earliest opportunity – bloody insurance for everything these days.

Plus Vets will ‘bargain’ if not on insurance.

And this is kind of the point – much like car repairs after a crash, if it’s insured they will hike the price through the roof. If enough people do this they’ll keep hiking the price and the costs become artificially inflated, and I for one don’t like paying for my vet to drive around in one of 3 race spec porsches. Someone is getting diddled somewhere, and it’s not the vet or the insurance.
