Picked up a set of these in the Christmas sales for £15. Great shows for cycling to uni/work then walking about all day.
But took them to a next-level testing last night.
Was down on Leith Walk with two friends last night, getting a macaroni pie from the late night bakery.
While enjoying my carbs a group of 5 teenage lads start milling about asking questions about the bikes and telling me they can steal an Ultegra bike for £40 and what kind of bike is that mister etc etc. Then one grabs the bike and runs off up the street with it.
I give chase to the young ruffian, who despite being a 16 year old lad cannot escape me in my Specialized Cadet SPD shoes. As he realises I’m not tiring and gaining on him, he tries to jump on the bike. As he tries to use SPD pedals with his non-Specialized Cadet SPD shoes I throw half a hot macaroni pie in his face, I close the gap and manage to grab him and pull him to the ground. Some fisticuffs ensue and I was quite enjoying using my weight advantage and beating the crap out of him when I get jumped from behind by a couple of his pals.
Fortunately I manage to hold my own relatively well before some passersby, impressed with my Daley Thomson-esque athletics performance, get everything split up and the ne-er’ do wells scarper up the road, and I still have my bike though a few more cuts and bruises than I had earlier.
So, next time you’re eating pastries and getting your bike pinched, make sure and wear Specialized Cadet SPD shoes! Though my main takeaway from this episode is that I can run faster than a 16 year old. Probably says more about them than me though…
