I have just got a sweet secondhand deal on a 5 pro 18″, although i thought it was until i got it home and measured it! Turns out its a 16″ ..Doh
Now i have a dilemna. Its a 2011 in top condition with a few upgrades, just what i had set my heart on but at 5’10” is it to small as i have previosly rode an 18″ Trek and have been told my all the shops i have visited in my search for this bike that i am an 18″. That said a guy at orange, who is 6′ claims he has always rode a 16″. i know i have a few options such as a laid back post and longer stem but will they make that much difference? to ride it only feels very slightly smaller and its prob a Physicological now as ive been told so many time im an 18″. Anyway, does anyone else out there of my height ride a 16″ ?

im 5’9 and 18″ fits perfect with a slightly shorter stem. I also know someone taller than me that rides a 16″ so if i was you id try it out

What does the sticker on the frame say? and how does it actually feel? did you not try different sizes before buying it!!!

I’m just under 6ft and have just picked up my 18″ five… I’ve always ridder 20″ treks and cubes… the 18″ five still feel big and the reverb only has another 2″ adjustment left in it. The bottom brackets are also quite high on fives I think.

There is no size on the frame and as it was advertised as an 18″ it didn’t cross my mind to check as i was to busy trying to everything else was sound on the bike. I did demo an 18″ a few months back but obviously cant exactly remember the feeling of the 18″ other than the overall bike felt good. It sound stupid but as i said checking the size was what the ad claimed didn’t cross my mind. When i discovered my balls up i must admit to feeling a right div but other than the size issue the bike is A1. Not yet rode it on any trails though so only time will tell, just know that if i decided to get an 18″ that im not gonna find another bargain like i had on this one.

Ive had 3 oranges now and always go for a size down. Very popular at glentress that tactic as well I was told by the guy in the bike shop. Makes them much more flickable. Im 6ft 4 and the fastest bike I had was a sub3. 16inch. Stupid quick. That was just a bit wee though and my style changed so I got an 20 inch patriot7+ which is wild. Be happy with the size down and use yer seatpost.

Recently got a 16″ and I’m 5,8. Frame size is fine and have nicked an inch or so on the seat post (just make sure the seat post goes beyond the seat stay junction by about 10mill.

Seriously: take it on a few good rides before you make your mind up. You’ll get a good split of opinions on here for your height, as it really is a personal preference thing. I’m probably just shy of your height and very happy with my 16″ for the riding I do. 70mm stem and inline post with the saddle roughly in the middle. I tried a 50mm stem and found it too cramped, so if you want to go that short that could be deal breaker. My riding tends to shorter these days (2hrs) but very technical with lots of jumps and drops and steep ups and steep downs (Australia). Maybe if I rode long days out I would prefer a more stretched position; I certainly preferred my longer Inbred when I lived in Hertfordshire.

I’m 5’9″ and have a 16″ with a 50 mm stem. For long rides the bigger cockpit of an 18″ may be better but for the techy stuff and all round fun the 16″ is a better choice for me.

what he said I have a 18 for all day rides in the mountains which is what i do the 16 ” would be more fun downhill but I doubt i could ride it all day tbh.
I would try it and see, my hardtail is a 17 so I had a similar dilemma re Orange frame size.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Just been for a quick blast around the park where i live. It does feel nice and flicky and i really like the carbon havens on it as they are wider than i was used to. Just like people have said,i can see it being fun on the trails will just have to see what the longer more clibmy rides are like. Dieing to get out on it this weekend but the front pads are fecked and the one i ordered wont be here until next week 🙁

Anyone want to buy an EX 8 ??

I’m around 5’11 but with short legs.

Tried a 16″ and an 18″ Five and the 16″ felt too cramped for me.

Bike styles and designs have changed a lot in years gone by. My first really decent mtb was a 15″ Canondale with rigid forks nearly 20 years ago. Back then i used to ride quiet technical routes and it felt really good but it did have quite a long stem – around 110mm i seem to remember.

When i bought my Five i went from a 17″ Elite and was a little unsure but now the 18″ feels just right.
