so you blocked the road, forced him to brake and swerve round you and you wonder why he objected.
I fear my explanation would be wasted on you.

sorry chris_mbuk - but you saw him coming, continued to do a 3 point turn when you could have waited (which is the correct way it should have been done)....he then had to brake and swerve because you were to impatient to wait for him 😆

how exactly is it his fault??? 😆

I think if I'd started (as opposed to just finishing) doing a 3 point turn I'd have braked and waved the cyclist though, but I wasn't there so don't know the circumstances. As it stands it's not a great rant though.

I also think your instructor (you did have one?) neglected to teach you about turns in roads.

chris_mbuk, that's a stupid thing to do.

it's like seeing someone cross a zebra crossing, and think 'they're still on the other side of the road, if i floor it, i may miss them'.

Pay attention and use your brain before nearly running someone off the road.

I understand your topic title now, what a Silly Billy.

righty, perhaps not so clear cut if you didnt see him from start...still if you were in the middle of the road and he had to slam on, you can perhaps see why he was annoyed? 😆

So when you saw him did you stop, or carry on manoeuvring?

when i was in the middle of the road about to finish the turn thats when he came down so i saw him and i stopped for him to get past and he slammed on so i would hear him skid even though i saw him coming way before he used his brakes and i was letting him past and then he told me to get out of the road so tbh ive done nothing wrong :/

so i thought oh hell wait i wont be a min

Why should he? You're in his way, doesn't really matter if he was there when you started, the polite thing is the stop manouvring and allow the cyclist (or car, or lorry) through before continuing. Fail on your part. Give you license back.

Yep, I can see what your saying, doesn't sound like you did much wrong. But bear in mind, a cyclist is ALWAYS in the right on this place...

From the cyclist's pov, you often don't know if a driver's seen you so a slide of brake and a shout isn't a bad idea. If the bike wasn't visible as you started the turn and if you stopped the turn when you saw him approaching thenm all's good.

But -

You can understand the rider assuming that you hadn't seen him, let's face it in that situ many drivers wouldn't or simple wouldn't care.

So ****, no. experienced rider assuming it was just another smidsy driver? probably.

relax a bit, driving is stressful and if it's been a different outcome, you'd not come off worst.

to be honest if you have pulled a turn in the road and you can't see far enough up or down the road to not impead traffic be it bike car lorry or motorbike then you are probably at fault for doing the turn in a poor place.

Whilst I always like to support fellow STWers, I can't help thinking your thread title relates to you. I know his reaction was extreme, but he was provoked a bit.

When executing a manoeuvre it is your responsibility not to block the road for other users, no matter what mode of transport they happen to be in/on. Whatever you do, you should not make other road users brake to avoid you.

I am afraid I am with the cyclist on this one. You blocked him and have been a bit arrogant in expecting him to wait. Sorry. What would it have taken out of your day to simply wait for a more vulnerable road user to pass safely and unburdened by your ill-placed u-turn?

As a cyclist I would like to think I am extremely sensitive of the vulnerability of fellow cyclists when I am in control of a car or motorbike. I think we owe it to each other.

I agree with the about from sola, I drive MTB and own motorbikes and a bad turn in the road this time has caused a biker to have to slow and avoid you, no big harm, but what if it was a motorbike heading a bit quicker... not saying it was 100% dangerous where you did the turn but sounds like it was unsuitable at least.

live and learn 🙂

you should have chased him down and run him off the road.. and then given him a good shoeing.. and then got his address and gone round his house and given his wife and kids a good shoeing too..

202
Look carefully before you start reversing. You should

•use all your mirrors
•check the ‘blind spot’ behind you (the part of the road you cannot see easily in the mirrors)
•check there are no pedestrians (particularly children), cyclists, other road users or obstructions in the road behind you

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069858
211
It is often difficult to see motorcyclists and cyclists, especially when they are coming up from behind, coming out of junctions, at roundabouts, overtaking you or filtering through traffic. Always look out for them before you emerge from a junction; they could be approaching faster than you think. When turning right across a line of slow-moving or stationary traffic, look out for cyclists or motorcyclists on the inside of the traffic you are crossing. Be especially careful when turning, and when changing direction or lane. Be sure to check mirrors and blind spots carefully.

Doing a turn in the road when you cannot see far enough as you clearly did is stupid and wrong

did no-one read the 'he had a crap bike anyway' bit?
having a crap bike removes any rights you have to anything, ever.
.
on a serious note, there are two things lacking on the road - courtesy and patience.
in my opinion, you did no wrong - the cyclist should have just been a little patient.

😉

You did a 3 point turn in a place where you could not adequately assess the traffic.
You obstructed a vehicle who was proceeding along that road.
You have only just passed your test and seem to be assuming you are in the right.
You then came to moan about it here to flaunt your righteous anger.

Why not chill, consider the possibility that you were wrong, as most of us are from time to time, and learn.

There is a reason that young male drivers have such high insurance premiums. They drive like idiots. I know, I was one.

If you want to look at it another way, that'd be a 100% stone cold major fault on a driving test, do not pass go, do not collect driving licence.

Wasn't there so I can't comment on the incident itself. What I do know is that I have far more people deciding to pull a 3 point turn in front of me & forcing me to stop when I'm on a bike than I do when I am in a car.

Chris - at the risk of adding a sensible comment to this forum, it sounds like this guy was moving a bit quick, and he wasn't there when you started to pull out. fair enough, I'm with you so far. Once you realised he was coming though best just to pull back in and get out of the way. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong, if you can lessen the chances of an accident then it's up to you to do that

Chris,
whether it was your fault or the cyclists fault, you'll get flamed on here regardless, but the best piece of advice I can give you is to examine what you did, and ask whether you could have prevented it, for instance by choosing a different place to do a 3 point turn, or even not doing a 3 point turn in the road - was there a gateway or anything you could have used to turn round without blocking the road?

It's often not about who's at fault, but about what you can do to avoid an incident. Unfortunately this comes with experience, which you'll get over the coming years (sorry if this sounds patronising, but I am teaching my youngest to drive at the moment, and it's surprising how different his attitude is to mine, even though I have a bit more experience than him....)

Clearly the rider did not possess adequate levels of radness. I'd have simply 360 bunnyhopped the car.
