What 24mm Cranks?

Need some ideas for 24mm cranks to fit my incoming Starling Beady Little Eye. Joe and the team had tried to make a 30mm spindle work so I could put my eeWings in it, but it’s not going to work.

I can get some Middleburns through Starling (which is plan a), briefly considered and written off XTRs as not the right look for this build. I want silver, understated, and light. eeWings would have been perfect for context. Wondered about some Profile BMX cranks but the fitment seems complicated and reduces availability of narrow/wide chainrings. Budget pretty much a non-issue within reason.

So, WWSTWD?

I have no idea because I went with Shimano SLX on my (singlespeed) Moxie – I just wanted 165mm and 24mm and reliable. I’d get the Middleburns if they’re the right length. V jealous of you getting a Beady Little Eye, cost/space no object it’s right at the top of my “other bikes I want” list.

I’d look at a different frame before I ditched Eewings.

I was going to say Boone over Eewings but looks like they’re 30mm only too. And there’s no 24mm option for Hopes

I have 19mm Profile Racing cranks fitted to my Nukeproof scout hardtail. At the moment I am running a Profile Racing outboard bottom bracket and the correct amount of spacers to set it up for boost spacing. I have also run it with a Shimano XT bottom bracket I did have to get some 24mm to 19mm reducers but from AliExpress they were a couple of pounds. For a spindle I am using a Gusset brand spider that is 104bcd this was around £25.  (https://www.urbanair.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1122)

Using a 104bcd spider gives me a good range of chainring brands/size for a small price.

As you’re running ss, the lack of NW rings shouldn’t be an issue, with proper chain tension

Thanks all, slight complexity is that because the Beady uses the BB shell area as a pivot it has inboard BB bearings, so no option to run outboard+spacers.

Middleburns are a fine fallback for sure, I’m just not convinced they’ll work visually with the rest of the build, which is all high-end machined parts. Having a look to see if the likes of THM etc do a 24mm MTB crank at the moment…

THM are mega light carbon arent they? Doesn’t really fit with a BLE IMO.

or a (more) left field choice, see if Carbon Wasp can 3d print you a set of their pinion cranks, but with an axle and chainring mount.

@tomhoward – yes those are the ones. They do do an XC crank but looks like it’s 30mm again.

BMX cranks make me a little nervous, but only really because I’ve never used one before so am unfamiliar working with them and am unsure about the various spacing and axle options. Good shout on CarbonWasp – will get in touch with them next week.

Profile cranks, do they still make shiny titanium ones?  Or Middleburn would be my choice unless you can be bothered to raw some Shimano cranks.

I’ve got Middleburns on my steel SS – I think they suit it pretty well. I chose black because everything else apart from the frame is black, but of course it wears off with shoe contact.

Shimano SLX and get the anodising stripped and Cerakote them + use an Unite chainring.

Quite like the shout to strip and anodise – assume that can be done for any alloy/steel crank?

Which cranks do Starling suggest fitting for minimal fuss.

Surely they’ve tested a few FFS.

Cerakote isn’t anodising
