    I’m seeking some advice.

On my road bike, occasionally when decending at speed there is a nasty vibration coming from the back end, it sometimes goes away with a slight back pedal. I’ve check wheel bearings and they seem ok. Is it worth checking the freehub bearing or any other obvious suggestions? The wheels are an old set of mavics. thanks

I may be miss remembering as it was quite a while back but.

I had a set of Mavic wheels that did a similar thing and it was a plastic spacer/tube type thing in the freehub that would go dry and cause the problem.

A quick clean and grease always sorted it.

Yup, had the same issue on some old ksyriums, the delrin bush at the inner end of the freehub wears (almost imperceptibly) and causes a weird vibration or howling noise. Spot of oil or grease every now and again fixes it.

There was a place doing rebuild kits. But not cheap, and probably not worth it for me (the wheels are 20+ years old now and 10-12 when they first had the issue)

Had the same with some Cross Rides – as above, drop of oil between hub and freehub sorts it. You usually get a loud squeal too.
