WeeRide child carrier questions – changing supplied M6 bolts – sizing, etc.

I’m trying to fit a WeeRide to my head and seat tubes, but they’re (the tubes) a bit wide to fit the brackets, if I include the frame protectors. If I use the brackets without the frame-protecting bracket inserts, it fits ok. However, I’d rather use them with the protectors if possible. The M6 socket cap screws supplied measure 50mm from the top of the cap to the end of the screw. Is this the measurement I use to buy some alternatives or is the measurement just along the shank of the screw i.e. from the bottom of the head to the end of the screw? I reckon, I’d need 65-70mm-ish to be able to use the protector brackets.

And secondly, will this compromise the safety of the fixing by going for longer screws than those supplied? 😕

They are measured to the finished surface height.

For socket cap, pan head etc it is the length of the shaft.

For countersunk it is overall length.

The load on the fixings will not be affected, the load on the brackets will change if the angle of the fixing is significantly different to the design, you could use spacers on the fixings if needed.

no expert and the length wont alter the breaking strength by any real measure [ it will still be measured in tons]

For bolts the shaft length is the measure – I am not sure if you mean a nut and bolt here when you say screw tbh

an old inner tube will work as both protection and a grip [ general applications]if required.

IANAL and I dont own one of those wee rides but I doubt the forces required are so massive you cannot do as you suggest

The question will be how well it grips /will the bracket deform as you tighten and /or damage the bike. again not safety critical IMHO but not ideal either

Talking of Weerides, how old do you think the kid has to be before you put them in the crossbar seat?

JY, I’d tried searching for them using bolts, but found more results using the term I mentioned in my OP. I’d have thought they were bolts too. 😕

kb, like most of these things, they go on weights rather than age but supposedly from when they can support their heads. I’d not have put mine in till around a year though.

I used spare bolts, from an old bed I think, to make it fit my 1.5 headtube

They include 2* x 70mm bolts in the same bag as the hex key (fait de fromage) and spanner . One would assume that they are for people with extra wide head-tubes like mine. And who aren’t complete arseholes and might work this out. 😆
