Anything is possible. It depends what’s wrong with it and if you can get replacement parts.

Might just be a belt. Have you tried taking it apart?

Not if you fitted alkaline batteries to a Sony Walkman pro, fries the circuit and no parts available, but in the above Walkman it’s probably just a belt you can buy online unless it’s a direct drive motor in that case you may find a unit on eBay to bastardise for parts.

The light turns on when I put a battery in, but it’s not game to move at all. I think it is direct drive, but haven’t pulled it apart yet.

Should I take it back to Dixon? In 1998 I always made sure I bought from bricks and mortar so I could return if faulty. 75 quid!?!

A quick google of the repair sites shows the most common issue with non playback of the sx20 is a clutch retention disc

    Nice. I’ll look into that.

Can you hear any sound of the internals moving at all when you press play/fforward etc?

    Nope

I’ve not repaired consumer electronics since the mid nineties. That said, I’d expect to hear some noise from the unit if it’s a clutch issue. It’s possible it’s shutting down due to the clutch not working in principle though. However id still expect to hear some noise, even if only for a split second.

I doubt if anyone in Dixon’s/Currys/PCWorld will even know what that is, let alone how to fix it! Fiio are producing a pocket portable cassette player if a replacement is needed.

It would be great to try to fix it up.

    Nice.

My 10 year old son asked me what it was… I showed him the cassette and he said “oh yeah I know what that is, it’s like one of those record things but smaller!”

Have you turned it off and back on again?

Have you foolishly used it whilst sea kayaking?*

    * This makes absolutely no sense unless you have read the other Walkman thread.

Well I tried … I turned it off roughly 15-20 years ago.

I’ve got my old walkman somewhere.

    One of these.  Wasn’t cheap.

    Can it be fixed?

It’s Tricky. When my Rock Box developed a fault (the Pause button stopped working) I was told it was Hard Times. Here We Go I thought…but that’s life. Sometimes It’s Like That.

    It’s great!

I love the Yesterday TV channel – so much good stuff on there.
